Hey guys, its me again. I successfully installed Bootcamp onto my new macbook pro, but there seems to be a problem.

The mac starts to heat up very quickly upon using bootcamp. When I change it back to the regular OS X, the system cools down.

Is this normal? Or should I go and get it fixed?

Personally, i think it's quite normal. A lot of times my fans rev up to max and gets quite loud.

What programs do you have running?
Or is it just the system?

Mine cranks up when AVG Anti-virus is scanning in the background

I believe its the system itself. Even if I don't have any programs running on Windows, it heats up. Does the fan automatically spin faster when the system is getting hotter?

yes, the fans click on when the components of the computers inside get to a certain temp. not sure what those temps are.

i just checked my HD temp for my imac and its at 133 degrees. scorching hot but i honestly dont think ive ever heard the fans on this thing...i think youre fine. if anything call apple and ask them what they think.

On the new unibody MBP, when you switch into windows via bootcamp, the 9600 video card is activated, rather than being able to choose the 9400, this might be causing some extra heat.

Exactly.

OS X uses the 9400M card for video (unless you specify otherwise), whereas Windows uses the 9600M.

The fan on my MBP screams after playing a 3D game under Boot Camp, and very slowly winds down afterwards. But the MBP is just plain hotter whether I'm gaming or not, and I credit the 9600M card.

And battery life is awful under Boot Camp. Best to stay near an outlet when running non-virtualized Windows.

The fan speed that it is set to in OSX upon restarting is the default fan speed when you boot into BootCamp. That's why it gets so much hotter when the 9600 kicks in, the fans still think the 9400 is being used.

Use InputRemapper to manually configure your fan speed. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=58373

It's not just the MBPs that are having this problem. I have a unibody 2.0 MacBook, and whenever I run Windows 7 in Boot Camp, the machine gets noticeably hotter than it does under OS X. And my machine only has the 9400 for graphics, so it's not necessarily the 9600 that's causing the problem. Apple needs to issue an updated version of Boot Camp that addresses these issues. A lot of people have bought into the hype of being able to run both OS X and Windows on these machines, only to have to now worry about their machines overheating.

there are too many threads about this we need a faq i guess but basically yes fan control when running windows isnt great

sooooo if you do very heavy work or heavy gaming under windows and you need your hardware to last a while then its not a crazy idea to try smcfancontrol or something like it to manually up your fans for your windows sessions

anyone interesting about this idea just search the forums for inputremapper or smcfancontrol

I have no problems with fan control or whatsoever under Boot Camp.

I wasn't sure higher temp in my MacBook using Windows was normal or not. After some research, it appears this is normal. I never experienced a computer crash due to the high temps, however battery life was just terrible so I decided to remove XP from my iMac and run Vista. That seems to be a better solution, however I will give the Windows 7 RC a try on my MacBook.
