MacBook Pro - iChat AV coming out of right speaker only?

with headphones on, i can hear both channels but using laptop speakers, sound only comes out of the right speaker with iChat AV. is this normal?

Personally, I do not use iChat. But I have heard that since the microphone is located in the left speaker grill, iChat disables the left speaker, so as to reduce the echo that might occur during an audio chat. This is a normal operation.

I would advise you to confirm this though.

This is correct.

iChat disables the left speaker to minimise echo effects because the microphone is under the left speaker grille.
