MacBook Pro / iPhone iMessage Alerts

Hello - I recently went over to a MacBook Pro 15 inch, I am now to Mac OS but have been an iPhone user for years. I set up iMessage on my laptop however I notice when my laptop is on and I receive an iMessage, my iPhone does not send me an alert. I shut off Handoff and that did not do it. Is there a trick to avoid this? My issue is that when the MacBook is on and I am home with it, if I walk away from the MacBook I don't get message alerts. When I shut off MacBook iPhone gets messages as normal.

MacBook - Mojave 10.14.1
iPhone - IOS 12.1.

On your phone in settings/iMessage do you have your MacBook Pro listed and enabled in “text message forwarding”?
