Hi I am new to macs and thought I would post here for help
I have purchased a second hand MacBook Pro and cannot access a lot of safari pages or get down the latest updates
Do you require a apple id to get updates down
My internet connection is fine and fast so that's not the issue
I tried to download avg but when it came to install also had the safari issue
.

Would help to provide info about model, OS version. Can get that information under [Apple icon :apple:] > About This Mac
and under Applications > Utilities > System Information > Hardware.

The latest macOS software that model will "officially" run is macOS 10.11.x (El Capitan). A macOS version that old is still going to be quite a bit frustrating due to incompatibilities, security and otherwise, with software and also websites on the internet.

The battery in it…original or even a replacement…is probably just about useless and may actually be a safety hazard.

However, it can be updated to much more recent versions of macOS…with several limitations…using the Opencore Legacy Patcher (OCLP).

My opinion is that it's not worth the effort or probable expense (needing to upgrade the RAM and/or install an SSD, replacing battery). But if you like doing that kind of stuff…go for it!

You are having problems browsing because your safari is seriously outdated. Mountain lion can still be used with an updated browser - use safe browsing practices.
