MacBook Pro- just died

My 2ghz core duo Macbook Pro just died. Everytime I start, the apple logo comes on screen and then the machine kernel panics.

I've got a feeling it has overheated or somthing, as it felt very hot. Even though its on an iCurve.

Has anyone else experienced this ? Could it be the GPU ?

Eitherway it looks like it will be winging its way across the country to an Apple repair centre in the morning. :eek:
 
Mine just started doing that this week. Even holding c and booting the startup disc to reformat gave the kernel panic. I sent it in, should be back on Tuesday and wondering what they did to fix it.

Nope the hard drive is fine I can boot into Transfer mode and read all the data on the drive.

Nope the ram is working fine too, I've already swapped between a macbook to check.

So it has to be somthing else. If I try boot camp, windows xp boot's up in safemode, but will not boot up normally.

Considering all this, it therefore seems logical to me that it is somthing to do with the graphics card failing.
 
Mac Problems

If it's a new Mac I'm sure Apple will be able to help you quickly and effectively. I would not try to figure it out myself or even worse trying to fix things myself. Even if you manage to start up you will never know whay the problem came to be in the first place and you don't know when it would come again.
 
I hate kernal panics. Lucky for me, My MBP has been running super. (*knocks on partial board*, the closet thing to wood)

My MBP does get really hot sometimes though, not enough to shut the system off. But if you let the unit sit switched off for a period if time and it boots then, then you would have a heat issue. I could see that happening, could be the GPU as well. Both the CPU and the GPU are in the back and relatively close to each other.
 
I had a problem like that recently (kernel panic during booting even when using an external HD or the install CD). I think what fixed it in the end, was booting to save mode (holding the shift key during boot up). At least that way it booted and during the next normal boot it came up without the kernel panic again.

Maybe you could try that. Btw, booting into save mode while holding the shift key took a few minutes. So don't be impatient.
 
My Macbook Pro has been giving me grief with Kernal Panics lately but thats only when I am over working it. Do you have Apple Care?
 
You've said that you were able to check on your data by booting into target
mode. This implies that you have another mac that you can connect to
your MBP. After having set it up in this configuration, did you try running
Disk Utility from the second system, selecting your MBP disk, and doing a
Verify Disk / Repair Disk?

Of course, if you haven't yet, I suggest running a backup of your MBP disk
while it is in target mode attached to your other mac. At least then you'll
have recent data to restore if you end up getting a new disk.

One thing that can cause kernel panic during boot is if the filesystem on the
boot partition of your startup disk has been corrupted in some way. Just
because you can read (most of) the data from your other mac doesn't mean
there isn't some underlying problem with the filesystem on the drive.
Often, if you run a Repair Disk from disk utility, such corruption can be diagnosed and repaired.

Give it a try...

It was randomly suffering from kernel panics before, but never this severe.

I guess whatever hardware was on the way out - has finally packed it's suitcase and left the building.


Guess I'll just have to make do with my black macbook, white macbook, mac mini, ibook, mac pro, imac G4 whilst its playing up.

Is this the Refurb Macbook Pro you bought?

This was probably the reason it was sent back in the first place. It might be an intermittant hardware fault that was fixed on the bumpy road back to apple.

Also give me a hollar if you are coming up to the big smoke and i'll give ya a few tips on nice places to eat :)

BTW i thought you sold off the Macbooks...

Hiya mate, Well I did sell them off kinda, it was to family members in the house so I still have access (especially the black macbook that just sits on a shelf in the office doing nothing 95% of the time) so does that count ;) :D

Yeah probably was the very reason the MBP was a refurb in the first place. I just hope they fix whatever it is.

I havent decided if I'll just courier it - or take the day off and hit the big smoke. I'm just winging it to see if I can get as much work done as I can. Too many deadlines this week.

Would you believe i was down in the sticks... i mean Kerry ... just this weekend. Could have couried it for you :)
 
Crazy, mine is a refurb also that was giving me this problem. I didn't know about holding shift in attempt to boot it. I wish I had known before, maybe I could have been able to backup all of my data before sending in. Ah well..
