macbook pro keeps crashing (only so far when sleeping)

This is really frustrating my macbook pro 16" keeps crashing when sleeping.

Is there anyway to tell from the panic stack track what program caused the panic?

I really really do not want to remove everything, i have just added to get this working as i needed.

My M1 iMac has been having regular nighttime "panic attacks" since I installed Monterey. This never happened when it was running on Big Sur, so I think it's just a macOS bug.

Updated to 12.1 this morning so hoping it has a well earned good nights sleep without any drama tonight!


Edit: iMac has made it through it's first night with 12.1 without a crash... Looks promising.

I just come down in the morning and find it wants my password to restart, rather than just fingerprint from sleep. Then after startup tells me my machine restarted because of a problem and gives me the option of submitting report to Apple... (Which I do - nearly every morning!)

It never did this with Big Sur - so it must be a Monterey bug!

I've just posted a new thread asking about partitioning my SSD and installing Big Sur on the new partition (my M1 iMacs original OS), so I can go back to what worked and just try out Monterey each time there's an update.

I think if you really really want to downgrade. U need to use the ipsw and use Apple Configurator to downgrade it (the oldest you can is the one it came with). Although you might be able to boot a big sur system with the bootable USB install method if you choose reduced security in the startup utility thingy

Hmm... I'm thinking the bootable USB method would probably work me (my other Macs are 2014 & '15), and I guess I'd only have to reduce security to use the installer, then put it back to how it was.

But I've just thought of something to try first...

I'm thinking maybe my iMac is crashing the nights when I've been using my laptop in bed, so perhaps syncing the tabs, photos, or whatever with iCloud whilst asleep is causing the crashes?

I may try just closing Safari and photos down before I go to bed and see if that makes any difference. I don't really want to close anything else down, as I leave lots of stuff running on my computer to pick up where I left off the next day. Which is why this is so annoying.

Yeah, that's a good idea.

Also, as it's easy (in so far as Apple wants me to download Monterey & nothing else!) I've just started a clean install of Monterey onto a fresh partition to see how that behaves. Even in just six months of ownership I've accumulated a lot of junk on it - something may be causing issues...

I don't mind a few days "messing about" if I can just get the damn thing to work reliably.

I've been running on my "new" clean install of Monterey for a couple of days now, and touch wood it seems far more stable with no crashes. Only bug I've found is Do Not Disturb doesn't work (still chimes away for email), but I've cunningly solved that by using the volume buttons! ?

So unless it goes flaky again I'm a happy bunny...

Incidentally dual booting my M1 system worked just fine. Just a matter of holding down the power button (same as Recovery mode) and selecting which startup disk. Now I'm satisfied with my clean install I've erased the "buggy" copy of Monterey and for now I'm leaving the partition spare. I'll probably use it again when the next version of macOS comes out so I can try it before making it my everyday OS, and I'll keep what by then will hopefully be a solid version of Monterey (12.6?) to continue using if I prefer...

Glad I configured my iMac with a 2TB SSD - I just knew it'd be a good choice!

(I've found partitioning disks very useful in the past. Clean installing each new version of OSX on its own partition kept my original 2009 iMac running smoothly for years..)

Same. I have an old MBA 2014 too. Yeah it works fine there I think. I don't plan on using it since i usually use just the bootable USB installer. But yeah it's nice knowing that I have another rescue option if we can't even go boot to the USB installer
