MacBook Pro + Leopard

I just bought my first Mac, a brand new SR MBP 2.4 ghz last week and was wondering something...

When Leopard launches, how buggy are some of you anticipating it to be? As a previous Windoze user I knew not to buy the initial launch of an operating system. I bought vista and installed it on a 'vista capable' laptop, needless to say its been in the shop for a month.

So, with that being said, do you think it would be a safe bet for me to buy Leopard upon its launch and install it in my new (and amazingly sexy) MacBook Pro, or wait until the kinks have been worked out? Does Apple tend to have problems with new Operating Systems?

I too ordered my new MacBook Pro and plan on waiting a full year before I purchase Leopard. I am waiting til the kinks are worked out as well, I know maybe its the Windows user in us that is frantic about this and we don't need to be but I believe its the best thing to do and wait. I don't want any problems either with my new lappy.

Well, as you can see, OSX isn't buggy at all. And, I highly doubt a new version of it would as well be buggy. I'd suggest at least to wait till Christmas. Then, all the bugs should be gone by then.

Waiting a full year isn't quite necessary, but don't expect everything to be perfect. If you really want to be careful, just wait for 10.5.1/2, and everything should be worked out.

I don't blame you. lol I sometimes still do too. But, I'm trying to delete all my Windows shortcuts and stuff since they won't be needed. And, I'm trying to get rid of my Windows thinking too.

I think I've pre-ordered every release of OSX since 10.2, so I'd have it ASAP. I don't think I've ever has any real issues with a first release. YMMV, of course.

Hmm, good to know. That brings me a bit more confidence about buying Leopard early as opposed to waiting.

To the user who said they'd wait a year, it seems like a bit much. I think I'm just going to wait until they've worked out any issues. Hopefully that'll be within the first 3 months of the Leopard's release.

Im excited to see what this new OS brings. I love my new MBP and I love the attractive price of Leopard. It seems so reasonable, and there arent any ridiculous versions. None of this ultimate or professional garbage. Just straight up Leopard.

I'm buying it the minute it hit shelves. Apple gives advance copies to developers months prior to its initial release, so I'm pretty confident that they would be able to identify any major bugs beforehand.

I think you are missing something, ie "almost all updates(!)"

I know I'll be buying Leopard the day it comes out. I did the same with Tiger (for my G5 Tower) and I can't remember having any problems what-so-ever.

Just to give you some point of comparison, Leopard builds from last month (WWDC developer builds) were pretty stable for an OS still in Alpha. I doubt that you'll have much at all to worry about come time for Leopard to go gold. Of course there's always the possibility of problems, but if you're overly paranoid you shouldn't need to wait any longer than 10.5.1 to upgrade.

Apple are quite quick at fixing things and posting updates available if there was any problems.

Compare that timeline to the likes of MS...who have Vista SP1 in production but won't be out till next year apparently.

I wouldn't worry - I trust Apple. They've been working on Leopard for a long time and aren't rushing it (they even postponed it so they could work on the iPhone, postponed instead of trying to get it out before they used the software developers on the iPhone). Unlike MS who rushed Vista to the absolute max and ended up not including most of the features in it.

Isn't it in the beta stage, pretty late on as well in turns of developer seeds.

I preordered Tiger and didn't have any problems until i switched to Intel (noticeably less stable and more buggy) I will be pre pordering Leopard and installing straight away. Really looking forward to the first release that is going to be Intel from Day one.

I am not sure yet - depends on me budget situation, since I will be getting Leopard, plus latest iLife and iWork suites - so the money kinda adds up. But the kid in me will probably end up getting it on launch day.

But for the peeps waiting till December, might as well wait till couple of weeks more and see what announcements, if any, are made at Macworld Expo in mid-January and then buy. Who knows, you may get an extra goody or two that they release at Macworld.

To be fair, they have an awful lot more hardware to have to test against, and far more people submitting bugs that require triaging.

Why not make it backward compatible then?

If it worked on XP, why do they have to change everything so that it doesn't work on Vista?

Fair enough they are improving it, but backward compatibility is a key in an OS upgrade otherwise you are stumped!

If you have any reservations about it, then just hold off for a few days after it is released. Come here... I am sure this place is going to be blowing up with problems as well as all the new "gems" and stuff that was not talked about prior. You should get a pretty good idea of whether or not it is something that is ready to go as a 10.5.0 version.

You also have to remember that it will be optimized to run on your machine much better than what we are all using now so....

Lastly, there is no such thing as a perfect OS. I believe Apples OS is much better than the Windows OS in any form, but it will never be perfect. There will always be bugs that are being worked on. There are bugs that are being worked on in OS X 10.4.10 and there will be bugs being worked on in Mac OS X 10.5.9.

You should get a good representation of its faults though by coming to this forum.

Backwards compatibility is extremely hard to achieve when there are shifts to the key architecture. That said I know a lot of people using Vista and they find it stable although bloated.

Thanks a lot, I'm proud to be a Mac user. Windows was torture, I've had 2 different laptops running windows in the last 2 years and they have been a complete disaster. As a university student, I cant afford to deal with lost lectures, papers, etc... I feel the mac is much more stable for what I want to do... plus, Im in a media program, so I probably should have been running a mac from the start.

I will be here the day Leopard comes out, I want to know everything about it and how it'll benefit me. Until then, I'll just cruise around here, reading up on macbook's and macbook pro's, getting a jist of how these machines work and what problems they experience. Maybe one day I'll be able to help someone with their mac problems, just like some of you have.
