Macbook Pro Logic Board Replacement/Merom upgrade

Hi guys,

I need to send my MBP in for the logic board upgrade to kill the whine. Does anyone know if the logic boards that are replaced come with the cpus already soldered to them, or if the are put in later by some technician dude. I'm basically wondering if there is anyway to get a merom into my MBP!!

I doubt this would work, more speculation that anything else.

I think what captainbrendo was saying is that he might like to wait for merom to come out and then ask if he could have the CPU upgraded to Merom at the same time as the logic board replacement.

I believe in another thread "Macbook Pro reborn" the poster sent in a 1.83Ghz MBP for servicing and got it back with the whine issues greatly improved. By the same rationale what do you think the service centre will tell him if he says "Hey dude, the new lower MBP is now a 2.0Ghz model instead of a 1.83Ghz model, how about you upgrade my CPU to that one instead?"

Doesn't make a lot of sense does it?
 
i dont see this happening unless you are able to get your macbook serviced by a local repair shop, that is authorized for applecare. see if you can get your tech there to work with you.
 
You didn't buy a Merom machine therefore you are not entitled to a Merom machine. If I took my powerbook in for repair I couldn't expect they would throw a MBP logic board in there just because that is the current machine. Furthermore the boards will most likley not be compatible. Furthermore the Logic Boards have the processor soldered from the factory so you cannot and neither can the tech change the CPU for you. The best you can hope for as far as a free upgrade is if the machine needs to be repaired 3 or more times Applecare may give you a new equiv machine. Maybe.
 
You are obviously expecting too much, no way will they upgrade the CPU for you just because you get a logic board replacement...

a bit of rant...

i really can't stand people (sorry, OP, including you, but not directly directed at you) ignorantly expecting Apple to somehow freely give you the latest technology when 1. you didn't pay for it in the first place, 2. just because you will have apple handle your repair at one point... also just because your shipping date is after some supposed event day, you speculate that that means apple's releasing a new product, and you are getting it... i can't stand it.
 
Maybe they can upgrade my Ford to a Lincoln next time I take it in for an oil change. Hopefully something with fewer miles. :p
 
I don't see why this post get's so wrongly read. He is asking basically if the cpus are soldered or not to the logic board. That's it. Are they? I don't have a MB so I don't know.

If they are not, then he could (at least theoretically), eventually, buy a Merom cpu in NewEgg or something like that, and then put it himself into the logic board, or have someone do that. AFAIK the Core and Core 2 are pin compatible.

As far as I can see, that's what he is asking. I don't see him asking in anyway if the CPU will be upgraded for free (or even for a fee, I don't think Apple will do that kind of things) when he get's his MBP repaired.

he's asking more than one questions... according to his title, he's wondering whether the merom upgrade would be affecting his logic board upgrade... and he's "basically" wondering whether he can be a freeloader
 
They come soldered to the logic board from the factory. They are surface mounted which is close to impossible to do by hand.

I have no experience of it but I was lead to believe it was much harder than this, especially with the current Intel BGA packaging...

Doesn't sound that way to me - he's asking if he sends in his laptop for a logic board replacement (to which he's entitled), will he receive a logic board that is CPU-upgradeable.

I believe his intention is to see if down the road he'll be able to pull out the existing chip and put in a Merom, not to see if Apple will upgrade his laptop to Merom for free.

It's like ordering a salad to go - maybe he'll decide he wants bleu cheese instead of thousand island, and he wants to know if when he gets home, he can buy bleu cheese and replace the thousand island. He's not asking the restaurant to give him both.
