My current Macbook Pro (15 inch 2015 model with retina) has a default resolution that 'looks like' 1440x900.
Does the new M1 Pro 14 inch model offer that same 1440x900 look or is it rather more like 1280x800 ?

I know you can scale to higher resolutions, but on my current MB Pro, that comes with less crips text and a slight performance hit. In other words, how much screen 'real estate' does the 14 inch model offer by default ?

Anyone ?

Default for Display is is 1512 x 982 (3024 x 1964) 254ppi and Scaled "More Space" is 1800 x 1169 (3600 x 2338px). Since MBP 14" liquid retina XDR display is using 2x integer scaling, performance wouldn't take too much of a hit.

Anytime!

Here's MR forums in both scaling. More Space isn't too bad, though a bit challenging at times for my old eyes ;)

Likewise. Somehow, scaling to 1920x1080 on my 15 inch MB Pro is a bridge too far :)
In any case, I'll be perfectly happy with that default resolution on the 14 inch M1 Pro !

I still have a 2017 27 inch iMac for when I need more screen real estate but once that machine starts showing its age, I'll just get an external display for the M1 Pro, probably 27 inch...

I know this isn't quite what you were asking, but for additional info, the screen real estate below the notch is exactly 16:10, which is the computer screen size / ratio that most ppl are familiar with (Eg. 1280 x 800, 1440 x 900 or 1920 x 1200).

As @Feisar mentioned above, the 14" screen is 3024 x 1964, and macOS shows it pixel-doubled, so effectively "looks like 1512 x 982".

The notch is 74 pixels high (64px notch + 10px thin sliver below it). So the actual screen real estate below the notch / menu bar is 3024 x 1890, which is 16:10. As many ppl discussed when the MBPs first launched with the notch, it's more support to the narrative of, "think of the notch area and height as extra screen real estate extended above and beyond what you'd normally get", vs "the notch covers up part of my screen".
