MacBook Pro M1 kernel panics - what does my EtreCheck report suggest?

Hey, I've got a 2020 MacBook Pro.

It has kernel panicked regularly for the entire year that I've owned it.

Fortunately, its kernel panicking less recently - although today did three back-to-back.

It's connected to a Caldigit Soho Dock that's connected to a USB 3.0 hub with multiple hard drives.

And it's connected to a 4K monitor.

So, I'm not sure where the problem lies.

Nothing leaps out from the Etrecheck report which surprises me a bit as I thought in the past when I had a spell of KPs it mentioned them.

Suggestions

1. Have a look at the Panic logs in /Library/Logs/Diagnostic reports/ ...may be some in /Library/Logs/Diagnostic reports/Retired....even quite recent ones. Looking at KP logs can often be fruitless, but if you see a pattern it may tell you something. Look for items like process involved in crash, last loaded kext etc.

2. I would be suspicious of two hubs in series and multiple hard drives. Since they happen so regularly can you run for a while without the hubs as a diagnostic. If they stop, try re-introducing in a controlled way to find the culprit.

I have a friend whose M1 MBP has experienced about one kernel panic every couple of weeks over the past six months (so much less frequently than your MBP, but still not normal — I've had 0 kernel panics in exactly one year since I got mine).

We could not figure out anything from either the Etrecheck report (which looked completely normal) or the kernel panic logs (which seem to have suggested some USB I/O device-related issue). Just the regular productivity apps were used, nothing special essentially. Sometimes the MBP would crash while working out of the blue, and sometimes it would kernel panic and reboot on its own while sleeping overnight, and in both cases, no external devices were connected to it (no hubs, no monitors, nothing). Kernel panic logs were not particularly helpful in the end.

It seems to have been a hardware failure as Apple replaced the motherboard. If disconnecting external devices, as suggested above, does not help alleviate the problem, I would have Apple have a look at it as hardware issues can be a major cause of kernel panics.

What macOS version are you running? I had kernel panics on my m1 until 11.4 and of course apple never acknowledged anything was broke or that they fixed it.
