Dear readers,

My MacBook Pro 2014 is almost maxed out of memory (256GB) and I now need to buy a new device with more memory.

Given the high cost of Apple toys I try to make them last as long as possible before upgrading. I was leaning towards the M3 Pro for MBP (with 1 TB storage). However I only really use my current 2014 laptop for backups (photos), YouTube, emailing and basic web browsing etc. No photo/video editing has ever been done. Is the M3 Pro chip overkill as opposed to getting the standard M3 chip (several £ cheaper). I was leaving towards M3 Pro for longevity reasons. I intend to keep this new device for ideally 10 years approx. so I don’t want it becoming obsolete anytime soon.

Question - given my basic usage as explained above, do I instead buy a iPad Pro with M4 chip (1 TB memory) instead? It is lighter and more portable than MBP. I can always buy one of those Magic keyboards if needs be later down the line.

If anyone has the M3 Pro laptop or iPad Pro M4 I would love to hear your reviews/opinions on here.

Thank you for reading. 😊

Unless you want to use iPadOS then a M3 MacBook Air sounds like best device for you. If you want the miniLED display then the M3 (not M3 Pro) MacBook Pro 14” is basically just an Air in disguise.

There’s hundreds of posts and videos about the differences of each but neither are a replacement for the other and the MacBook will last the longest hands down.

Thank you for your reply. I need 1 TB minimum (mainly so I don’t need to buy a new device when the memory is maxed out like my current MacBook Pro). The MacBook Air I don’t think have a 1 TB option hence why I ruled it out. I own a iPad Air 2 which I enjoy streaming Netflix etc hence why I’m leaning towards a 13” iPad Pro with 1 TB storage, maybe even 2 TB if i can afford it so it’ll last a lot longer? I do know Apple will stop providing updates to their devices so give/take 10 years is the max you can get out of a device before it’s deemed as ‘obselete’. Like my current iPhone X!

For your basic needs, as you have described them, either will work fine.
If you do go with the 1TB iPad Pro, consider the nano-texture screen. It’s very nice.

Thanks. I found out today that I need a MacBook Pro to back up photos and my iPhone etc. I’m also leaning towards the standard M3 chip (not the M3 Pro) as I don’t think spending an extra £600-700 to get the Pro chip I would not see any additional benefit.
