I have a 2023 MacBook Pro M3 Pro attached to a 27" Apple Monitor - sometimes it won't wake up - I have a OWC Dock - usb c to the dock - and then out of the Dock to the Apple Monitor - I have 4 Harddrives attached - BlueTooth Mac Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Trackpad.

Any ideas why it won't wake up? I have to unplug the Dock or reboot the Mac to get it to work.

I don't think there is a hardware problem here so I think the MacBook is entering a deeper sleep mode due to energy-saving settings or a software glitch,

There isn’t a Thunderbolt from the Monitor to the Dock - it is a Mini DisplayPort .
It has to be (or should be) a Thunderbolt cable to go from Mac to dock. Mini DisplayPort doesn't carry data other than video. So if you've got hard drives connected to your dock as well, you've got to be using a Thunderbolt 2 cable from the Mac to the dock.

FYI, MiniDisplayPort and Thunderbolt 2 use the same physical connector (though the cable's internals are very different).

Dock to monitor should be a mDP cable, however.

A work-round might be preventing sleep using :

sudo pmset disablesleep 1

but keep in mind - this prevents sleep even with a closed lid & nothing connected. Here, at least, the Mac display sleeps as expected from the System Settings.

Another edit - hopefully obvious advice : do a little research before using any Terminal commands someone posts on the internet. At the very least find a few other instances of the same suggestion & how to reverse it.

How do you enable sleep again?
