I'm looking at purchasing an M3 macbook pro in the coming days. i've been a lifelong thinkpad user, but i'm starting to tire of windows (and even moreso, linux), so i've been heavily considering Apple.

However, i have been spoiled with fan control on thinkpads in both windows and Linux for so long, that moving to MacOS, where, at least with the m3 and m4 currently, fan control is not possible (macs fan control and istat menu both mention that M3s can't currently be controlled).

So i'm wanting to know how hot these laptops run for "normal" people? I plan to connect it to a dock with external monitor, but will have the laptop infront of me and therefore will be using it's keyboard as my primary input.

A lot of reviews focus on the full load temperatures but nothing else really in between max load and idle, and even fewer mention what effect this has on the keyboard area. I do understand it will get warm when pushing higher workloads, but i'm wanting to know both the CPU temp and a rough idea of how warm the keyboard deck feels for the following.

idle (mainly for a base line)
general internet browsing
youtube playback @ 1080p
simple blender modeling (for 3d printing, not rendering)
photo editing

(these are not the only tasks i will be doing, but these are the ones i'm looking for input on)

i know full well these laptops are designed with everything in mind so that heat wont affect the components, so i'm more asking from a user experience side.

My Pro M3 14" generally hovers around 53C according to Hot app when doing most things (including 1080p YT streaming). I'm running Chrome (probably more of a resource pig) instead of Safari as well.

The fans have only come on once when I was processing a number of photos in Lightroom Classic (LrC).

The M-series processors run substantially cooler and more efficiently than the prior Intel MBPs. Battery runtime on my 14" is incredible.

If Just browsing the internet or YouTube and light games, you probably never notice it getting warm or the fans running even if it is sitting on your lap. I also have a windows laptop and the heat/noise is almost completely gone compared to the windows laptop.

I have an M3 Pro MBP. It runs cool and quiet at pretty much all times. I don't know if I've once in the past year noticed the fans spin up.
