Hi,

I've noticed that my Macbook Pro mid 2009 (with renewed battery, 2 years old) suffers from battery drain in sleep mode.

The battery seems to be OK according to Coconut Battery app:

Yesterday I look for a possible solution and I used this command:

'sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25'

Then I filled the battery, rebooted the Mac, made a CMD reset, unplugged the Mac and let it enter sleep mode for 19 hours. The battery was at a 80% (from 100%).

The result of a 'pmset -g' is:

Active Profiles:

Battery Power -1

AC Power -1*

Currently in use:

womp 1

halfdim 1

sms 1

hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage

networkoversleep 0

disksleep 10

sleep 30

hibernatemode 25

ttyskeepawake 1

displaysleep 10

acwake 0

lidwake 1

Can anyone help me to improve my battery life during sleep mode? I'm absolutely not an advanced user, but I can follow the instructions quite good, if they are detailed.

Thanks a lot!

Does the battery lose charge if you just power-off completely?
I suggest you try that a few times, keep notes, and see if it makes a difference.

I can only speak "for me", but if the battery lost charge while sleeping, but DIDN'T lose it while "off"... I'd just shut it down for longer periods of time and be done with it. (say, 3 hours or more)

I'll make the tests.

I wonder if this is normal with non-original batteries (when I changed it there wasn't yet original batteries for my mac in the market.

Mine is Newer-Tech.

Thank you

20% seems a bit much, but I get moderate drain from my MacBookPro5,5 on sleep too. This was with El Capitan and now on High Sierra. However, in my case, my battery is the original battery and it says the battery needs to be serviced, so I wondered if it was partially because it was a battery in poor condition.

That reminds me. It's time for me to get a new battery for my MacBookPro5,5. Mine has a battery capacity of well under 4000 may now and macOS is telling me to service the battery.

How much battery life is your battery giving you? I see on eBay a lot of 5800 mAh batteries available for sale. If that 5800 mAh is really comparable to Apple battery specs, then that would be a huge improvement for me. That would be roughly a 50% increase in battery life.

Regarding the NewerTech battery, is it from OWC? I don't see it listed there anymore for this MacBookPro5,5.

Mine was replaced at a local store associated to Apple in my area for mac support. I didn't buy by myself. It's this one: http://www.newertech.com/products/macbook_pro_13_2009_battery.php

I'll make a test and I'll tell you, with my normal use, of course.

My tests:
  • Hibernating: 20% loss in 19 hours. This was with El Capitan and with the option 'sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25'
  • Now with High Sierra, APFS. When Mac is turned off the battery losses are: 1+3=4% loss in 9h48’+25’=10h13'
  • With High Sierra, APFS. During my normal use: 12+20+62= 94% in 24’+17’+58’= 1h 39’. Use: Internet. Messaging apps, Mail, No videos. Includes 3 reboots.
Do you think the battery has a normal behaviour? In the beginning of this thread there is a capture of Coconut Battery.

Thanks!

Just to clarify.

You are saying that the battery is already 2 years old ?

If that's the case the indicator of showing full design capacity through the coconut apple seems way off.
No way it didn't degrade in 2 years.
Hopefully it only needs a little calibration. Did you ever tried to let discharge completely the battery?

I found this document from Newertech about calibrating their batteries.
http://www.newertech.com/batteries/power-calibration-guide/
The process is also mentioned on Apple's site somewhere and is essentially always the same but as you have a newertech battery i think it's best to follow them.

I have made the calibration.

It even shows a little bit higher capacity (6213 mAh), 100% of design capacity. In the first months it showed 102-103%.

Anyway, I still experiment strange battery loss specially when hibernating.

I'm experiencing this behaviour on one of my batteries also and I'm thinking that one or more of the cells are underperforming tricking the electronic to think that they are NOT under certain conditions (Full charged).

This is with a cheap looking third-party battery of my MBP (early 2008) but I also have a original Apple branded battery for my G4 PowerBook which I bought new-old-stock some years ago and which after overheating during 2 hours started to act the same...at about 30% charge left the laptop shuts down suddenly leaving to believe that one of the cells got effectively damaged during the overheating.

But while the Apple branded battery shows a realistically >60% design capacity with the coconut app the other third party is showing the full capacity or even above 100% design capacity.

The OS indicator for the health of the battery (third party) sometimes is showing to replace or service the battery but after a full charge resets to normal condition so I think you can't fully trust the coconut app neither the OS integrated battery health status function.

I took my MBP to support place and they diagnosed a faulty battery problem.

Fortunately, in Europe we have 2 year-warranty, so the battery is going to be replaced with no cost.

Update: At first they said the battery was failing, but after run their tests they told me the battery was OK and they didn't replace it. But the behaviour doen't seem normal.
