I recently replaced my Mac standard HD with a western digital, worked perfect for ~3 months. Last night I got a flashing ? On boot. I tried recovery and disk utility but my disk isn't showing up at all.
I ordered a replacement data cable to try that before I go broke in the apple repair shop.
My question is : is it worth my time replacing it myself? Is it likely this is a sata issue or is it more likely a hard drive problem? Unfortunately I don't have another hard drive to check.

It's a very quick and easy repair to replace the SATA cable. Also the SATA cable failing is a documented issue on your model of Mac.

I can advise that Apple have a silent repair program on the SATA cable for your model, so if that is at fault, they'll replace it free of charge (even if you're out of warranty). Worst case scenario, they won't charge you for an assessment, so it can't hurt either way to take a quick trip there.

Based on what you said and when you replaced the drive, I'd err more of the side of the SATA cable being faulty.

Hello, thanks for your reply.
I should mention I previously had a replaced data cable by apple for free. Would that affect another repair?

Might depend on how long ago it was. Apple replaced my cable (original one from 2012) a few weeks ago and said the repair has a two-year warranty.

They might turn down yours now because you already replaced the HD yourself. I had not opened mine up at all since the day I bought it.
