Good evening. I just purchased a MacBook pro mid 2012 and I would like to know what is the max ddr memory Stick it supports and would also like to know if any ddr3 memory sticks would work or would I need specific memory sticks

Any 1600 MHz DDR3 will work. I prefer Crucial, OWC, Kingston brands, but any sodimm should work. Put an SSD in it and it will be I nice and speedy. I have the 13 inch and love it.

I knew there was a thread here explaining this:

https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...rnal-ssd.2168129/?post=29802980#post-29802980

read the entire thread; all of it. What you're wanting to do is understand why you're doing it. Then start reading fishrrman's posts. Closely. I would try for one of the later posts of his where you're just copying everything.

Make sure you know to the bottom of your heart what your source drive is and what your target drive is, so you're not copying your blank target drive onto your good source drive!

My preference, and I have upgraded 6 or 7 of the 2009 - 2012 13 inch models, is to clone the hard drive to the new ssd. Put the ssd in an inexpensive USB3 2.5 inch enclosure like this:

Format the SSD to the same format as the internal drive, use carbon copy cloner (it is free for the first 30 days) to clone the internal drive to the SSD. Reboot the computer while holding down the option key to select the external SSD just to make sure it will boot. If all is well then remove the hard drive from the MBP, remove the SSD from the enclosure and install the SSD into the MBP and reboot, using the option method again to select the SSD that is now installed in the MBP.

16gb 1600 DDR3 memory runs very well mated with Samsung 870 Evo, it also runs extremely well with upcoming macOS Monterey, currently installed latest beta 5 with no issues.

@vince22 :The OP has a MBP 2012 , so latest supported OS is Catalina.
OpenCore as a first step might be a bit over the top IMHO...

There are reports of issues with the 870 EVO (and the QVO series) in Macs , so I would recommend e.g. a 860 EVO or a Crucial instead.

RAM can be upgraded to 2x 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 max and runs fine, especially together with a SSD installed you'll notice a nice performance boost.

BTW: depending on the latest OS version ever installed on your MBP , i would first check the firmware version of your device and run the Catalina installer (if necessary) with the OEM disk installed to get the latest firmware . In some cases the installer refuses to update the firmware with a 3rd party disk installed.

so you're not copying your blank target drive onto your good source drive!
CCC doesnt allow you to clone to a booted volume as target , and since the target drive is blank ,the Mac must be booted from the source disk.
So no worries;)
