Hey I am a Senior in High School and I am looking at the 17inch MBP. Do you think it would be wise to buy now, or to wait a while?

Depends on what you're looking for. Most new macs are suitable for the basic user, but if you want to get a "rev B" model of the macbook pro and maybe something extra, it would be wise to wait a bit. Don't hold me to that though if in September you have nothing though 
I think that now if a fine time to buy a new 17" MacBook Pro chrisperra.
Sure there are always going to be bigger better models on the horizon, but at the moment the 17" MacBook Pro is one heck of a computer that will last you for a long time to come.

Well I do Photoshop stuff, Final Cut, DVD Studio Pro, Aperture and other apps like that. I have the cash now, and it'd be cool to have now. I have a G5 that i can use for the PPC only apps though.
I'm waiting until August 7th to see what comes out. If you start school in Sept. Wait, I don;t think you will be sorry for waiting, because the new chip and a new design it's only a month to wait, its pretty good.
Hmmmmm, see the problem with that, is if they announce the new MBP August 7th, they wont ship until like the 22nd or so because the chip doesn't come out until the 22nd. If you NEED it for school, buy now.

would it be rather safe to say that i could use photoshop on the macbook pro? i just need it to do some stuff at school... but i dont have the UB versions of Final Cut because I have the Academic versions and they wouldn't crossgrade and I don't have an extra $700 to throw down for Final Cut Studio Academic.

Rosetta is fast enough. I run Fireworks on it, and it's pretty good. Not a speed demon, but seeing as most the time I use Fireworks for resizing thumbnails for my website, and I do that in batches, I just leave it open all the time I'm doing that and I don't have to wait for it to load (which is the only bit that seems to take aaages)...

Something I don't understand is all these guys scrambling to buy a new computer before school/uni starts. It's as if the universe ends on their first day...
I survived high school and the first semester of Aero Engineering with my cube, which is certainly lacking in all areas of power. It is my opinion that you do not NEED a fast computer at school or uni, but it certainly does help.
Therefore, even if the 17" MBP isn't updated until early september, I would still wait. My uni restarts on monday. I'm still waiting until August 7 (Uni wk 3) or however long I have to wait until what I want is available.
BTW, Why do all these people keep complaining about students getting great computers? My parents bought me my cube when I was 13, first year at high school. Here I am, six years later, and it is still my only computer. It still does most things I need for my studies. It's called an investment. Perhaps we should be criticising you guys for buying new computers every six months (possible exaggeration)? Surely that is wasteful.

I can only hope a MacBook Pro will do the same. Though I only plan to keep it in commission for four years. Or untill I graduate from college

Ditto here. Hoping new computer will last a while. Hopefully til the end of Uni as well.
BTW, Do ppl think I rant too much? I get a feeling I just might...
One more rant: I can't stand it when people suggest buying now, selling, and buying the new best thing a few months later. I have no doubt that for most people, like me, that's preposterous. It is far easier, less time consuming, less expensive and more hassle free to just wait.
