This Apple MacBook Pro 13.3" with Touch Bar - Intel Core i5 - 8GB Memory - 256GB SSD
Online Price $1,449.99
Less Promo $100.00

Cost $1,349.99 plus tax ($1,436 total).

On top of this there's also a $100 cash card you get in the mail, so around $1,336 total cost including taxes.

Is this a good deal? I will be buying a MacBook for my son in the fall when he starts college as a freshman. Not sure if I will get better deal in the fall, should I just wait??

It seems pretty decent, though I would lean towards the 2020 Air in this case because of the keyboard issues (having experienced the butterfly keyboard myself, it's okay but VERY unreliable). Your son should hopefully get a student discount (for me it's a link from the university or contact Apple and provide proof), and with that you will get $100 off, making the Air (with quad core CPU and 512GB SSD) $1199. The CPU is slightly slower, but it has a larger SSD and better keyboard which is better for typing papers/storing photos etc. What is your son planning to major in?

He is still undecided but maybe computer science or engineering, I hope!!

The Apple discount for college students, do you need to buy directly from Apple then? Because their prices are higher than Costco.

Yes, you will unfortunately. Basically your son's college will provide a link, or you contact Apple, then you can get special education pricing. Here's the link: https://www.apple.com/us-hed/shop.

For CS, I think the Air would be fine, though you could upgrade the RAM to 16GB which I would recommend, as it is better for certain uses (i.e. virtual machines). For engineering, it really depends what type of engineering he wishes to do: it may not be powerful enough for heavy 3D work but for MATLAB etc it will be okay. He will maybe need extra storage so that he can install Windows via Parallels or Boot Camp, (my brother studies electronic engineering and has a MBP, but he has to use Windows for quite a few things).

The new MBP 13 is out - I'd certainly recommend that if you want something a bit more powerful than the Air, but with a decent keyboard.

Costco still has it online, just no promo discount any longer.
