Macbook Pro or iMac?

As I stated in another thread, I am awaiting delivery of a MBP SR 15" LED Matte 160GB HD I was really torn on which computer to purchase (it was between a 20" or 24" iMac or a MBP). I currently have a 20" widesceen Dell 2007wfp LCD which is fairly nice. I was really planning on using the MBP as a desktop with the occasional use of portability. This could be portablity around the house or portablilty when visiting friends and family. The cons is that this setup is probably more expensive and not as elegant as the iMac. I also have concerns with heating and running MBP with lid closed.

Do any of you have any recommendations or advice as to which one you would go with and why? I know that I have already ordered the MBP but I can always exchange within 14 days of delivery as long as the box is not opened. Any opinions would be great.

If you really do have even the slightest inclination to take it somewhere, I'd probably go with the MacBook Pro.

As far as the overheating with the lid closed goes... why not just leave the lid open and extend the screen space? I run a 20" Cinema Display with my MacBook Pro pretty much every hour of the day and I always leave it open.

the only real question is portability, if you need it or not and then the choice is obvious i'd say.

Another point I wanted to mention is that it'd be nice to hook up the macbook pro to a big screen 1080p HD TV. It'd be a great way to share pictures with the family/friends. This is of course hard to do with an iMac unless it's in the same room as the big TV. Then there is always the option of iMac + iTV or iMac or iMac+Mac Mini. That may be more complicated and or more expensive than just a nice macbook pro that you could hook up anytime.

Yeah, it is awfully nice hooking up a good TV to a computer. I've got a 30" Samsung 720p LCD thats hooked up to my PowerMac, and even with the DVI -> VGA connection it looks quite a bit better than my Cinema Display does that's connected to my MBP. So, even if you get the MBP, you can still hook it up, don't worry.

I would go for the MBP definitely b/c they have been updated more recently and are more powerful with a better graphics chip. Also it is portable if you ever want it.

Definitely wait and see what comes around. I was looking at a MBP, but might end up going with an iMac/MacBook, or go all out for a Mac Pro.
