I purchased a brand new Macbook Pro and found that I have a perfectly NON yellow LG glossy screen. Unfortunately I found a dead pixel on the bottom left of the screen.

I realize that dead pixels are sometimes a caveat of LCD screens. Since I got a perfect non yellow LG screen, do you guys think I should just keep it and live with the dead pixel? After about 2 minutes I forget its there.

I'm afraid to risk getting it replaced for the dead pixel and get a yellow samsung screen or another screen with worse dead pixels.

I'm loving the mac so far though.

Apple won't usually take a machine bck because of one dead pixel especially where you said yours is. even if they did though since the screen is otherwise fine I would keep it. Alos are you sure the pixel is dead and not just stuck?

When I went to the Apple Store, the guy there said that Apple will replace the screen, even if there is 1 dead pixel.

If it bothers you, take it back to an Apple Store and see what they say. If not, then don't.

the pixel density of the screen is so high i can't believe you can actually see 1 dead pixel...

I'm not sure if it is dead or stuck. I've tried running some stuck pixel movies on it overnight and nothing changed. I've also tried massaging it, but nothing really helped.

My question to all of you is this somewhat normal for macbook screens? Do any of you have dead pixels that you just live with?

Jeff

Take it back and get a new one. If the new one is yellow, take that one back. Don't settle for a faulty product when you were expecting something great. Even if you forget about it when you're using it, it's there. And you will notice it when watching a movie or something. And when you want to sell it (in the future if you decide to) you will have a hard time advertising it as having "only 2 dead pixels". Take it back - they will replace it if you show them that it bothers you for having spent so much $ on a machine only for it to have dead pixels.

Good point. I'll try and call applecare and see if I can have them send me out a new one. Here is hoping that I can get one without yellow or dead pixels.

Don't worry about it...the replacement won't take a long time and they shouldn't give you any hassle.

You'll be extremely happy when you get a perfect replacement (eventually...if not on the next one) and you'll be super happy you decided to chuck the old one.

Good luck!

My first macbook pro had no dead pixels and no apparent yellowing.

Personally I wouldn't go through this hassle if I had an apparently perfect MBP. I would learn to live with the dead pixel. I have one green stuck pixel on my 20-incher at home in the bottom middle and never ever do I notice it...

I have one stuck green pixel thats near the middle of the screen, that you can only see when the screen is all black, and your eyes are about 4 inches from it. Aslong as it doesnt spread, then it basically doesnt exist to me.:)

I wish I had one that showed during all black. Mine shows on NON black screens :(

I tried to call apple last night but they were closed. I'll try again today and let you guys know if they will let me exchange it for a new one.

I didn't see in the thread when you actually purchased it, but if it's within the 14 day return period they will exchange it.

I don't. One night it just came into my room while I was asleep, wearing a green elf dress, hushing me back to sleep, stroking my chin and violating my pillow. Then and only then were the evil secret revealed...

Well I returned it to the apple store and asked for an exchange. The Apple people there were very hesitant to give me an exchange because of a dead pixel. They printed out Apple's policy showing that 5 or more dead pixels had to be seen. Since mine only had one they usually would not return it. They told me it was my lucky day and to not tell anyone about it.

I got home (75 miles away), turned on the new macbook pro and saw a horrible yellow mess. I got a samsung screen this time and it is obviously yellow on the bottom and darker.

I'm on hold right now with applecare :(

Excuse the hijack but I didn't want to start a new thread so if someone can answer my question while we wait for an update from the Original poster, that'd be great.

On the left side of the screen on my MBP 2,2Ghz bought in august, there are two pixels that are brighter than the others when the image is anything but black. It's only noticable when the image is a solid color but I'm such a perfectionist that it bothers me alot. Are these just stuck pixels or what? Do you think Apple will replace it?

Macbook Pro: Perfect LG Screen (no yellow) but found a dead pixel

Dear jeffsiler,

I suggest you take that. I also have a Perfect no yellowing LG panel MBP with a dead pixel for my first replacement of MBP.
The yellowing issue is much more obvious than a dead pixel (mine is a white, green dead pixel on the 1/3 bottme left of the screen).
LG panel is more white and bright in comparing with samsung panel I recieved on the initial purchase. :)
So it is not worth to take the risk to get a yellowing screen! ;)
At least you want to have free upgrade of leopord.
But bear in mind, that it is issue of LCD panel. :p

All the best,

Sorry to hear that:(, I think I was too late to post you a reply.
Try to get another replacement.
See if you are lucky.
Good luck. Cheer up;)

Sorry to hear that but imo you got a little too greedy...

Maybe I was a little picky, but not greedy. What I find most interesting about all this, is apple is selling a high end product with a low end screen (samsung). The panel is not a full 8-bit panel. The LG screen is slightly better in that it doesn't have a yellow tint.

When I was in the apple retail store attempting to exchange the dead pixel display I was treated like a "favor" was going to be done and it won't happen again.

Why should customers be treated this way? I spent $2000 on a product that has a worse display then my 3 year old dell laptop.

I've been an apple fan since I started working on Apple II's, and they have never let me down. But to say I'm being greedy about wanting value for my dollar is a bit wrong.

As I was on hold attempting a return for the macbook pro, the apple representative had to transfer me to their supervisor to take care of it. After 30 minutes of wait on the phone, the call was terminated.

Sorry if this is a big rant, but i'm so furious right now.

Dead pixel policy's vary, but they're hardly in the consumers favour. They tend to be between 5 - 8 pixels. The argument is if companies adopted a 0 pixel replacement policy, the cost of LCD's would go through the roof.

I'm also very very picky about my LCD's. I took 2 macbook's back because of dead pixels and I had to work very very hard to get them replaced. The first one, they exchanged it like it was a "favor", the second I just asked I wanted it to be upgraded to a MBP.

Anyways my MBP has been fine but developed a dead pixel in the top right hand corner. Considering I don't have yellowing, I'm not going to do anything about it.

I know how you feel, I lost sleep because of my macbook. I actually ended up exchanging it 4 times. Twice for dead pixels, once for a small "smudge" on the inside of the screen and once because the hinge popped.

Anyways, my advice after all that is, take it easy. Don't expect a "perfect" machine and don't be too picky. I agree as a consumer it is your right to have a "perfect" product, but for the sake of your sanity let some things go. Especially if they're not big issues.

Exactly. This is why manufacturer's have a minimum. LCD's are very costly, and expensive to replace over 1 dead pixels. In a screen with million pixels, one dead one isn't much to worry about, and depending on where it is, it shouldn't affect your work.

I can't blame people though for when they buy a $2000 laptop and it comes with a dead pixel, that they are upset. But when Apple says they are doing you a favour, they are, because their policy is 5.

So just an update..

I talked with a product specialist at apple and they are allowing me to exchange my Macbook Pro with the yellow tint.

As soon as I ship out the macbook pro they will identify the tracking number and ship me out a new replacement.

Here is hoping for a non-yellow screen :)

You made the right decision. Hopefully #3 will be good.

They shouldn't be doing you a "favor" by replacing it - the dead pixel is clearly a defect and I wouldn't have accepted it. That's one of the reasons I no longer shop at the apple retail store...

good luck + keep us updated
