i'm anticipating on getting a MBP 17" when the ship with the Merom chipset, but i'm wondering if the past MBP defects will be worked out by the time they release the next batch of MBP's... also what were the problems MBP owners were facing?

Nobody really knows. I personally think the MacBook Pro is a fine machine. Sure, it has it's quirks like anything, but nothing major. The new MBPs will most certainly be better (but not as good as mine:) )

The whine were due to the new Intel chips, which is why you'll have to rely on Intel to fix it.

Heat? Dunno, Merom's consume less power, and I have no clue if they generate less heat, but I think you'll be just fine. People talking about their MBP burning their lap is plainly wussiness.:p

Since this is rev. B, there is a smaller chance of faults, but nothing is guaranteed.;)

I am waiting on the 17" upgrade also, so I too hope Apple's quality issues of late are fixed in the second revision.

With that said, it seems like the 17" has less issues right now than the rest of the laptop line.

Fingers crossed the update is problem free...
