Macbook Pro Ram... what's the best brand?

Yes, I did use the search function...and I saw how many times people asked the same question about where to buy ram and whats cheaper, etc. etc. etc.

However, I couldn't find anything that said what the *best* ram was.

So.. I'm asking you guys.

What macbook pro compatible ram is teh best quality/speed/etc ?

I'm planning on getting the macbook pro 17"
 
I think there's a general consensus on these boards that Crucial makes the best RAM. :)

But I think they are almost as overpriced as Apple, so I go for cheaper brands. The last couple of Macs (including two MacBooks) I've bought RAM for have nice, cheap TwinMOS RAM in them, and the Macs didn't seem to mind... ;)

Don't think there's a (noticeable) speed difference between the different brands of RAM...
 
Crucial is the best place to get your RAM. Reliable and trusted. If you get your ram there it'll be good. Otherwise use macsales.com, you can get the same brand apple uses there (samsung if I'm not mistaken). Both will be perfectly fine.

-OWC - 2gigs/$225.00
-Samsung - 2gigs/$350
-Techworks - 2gigs/$250

If crucial or samsung are so much more better quality and stuff, I'm willing to invest the extra buck to get them, but I wish more people posted in here about their experience with cheaper brands =P
 
In the USA Data Memory Systems $238 or $184 depending on the model you choose. Both guaranteed compatible. One lifetime warranty, one 1 year.

There is absolutely no speed difference between brands of compatible RAM -- they all run at exactly 667 MHz. Once the foundries start turning out faster chips, we may see lower latency RAM come to market, which may be faster in the Intel Macs. Latency is how long an individual chip has to wait to "recharge" (an oversimplification) before doing the next operation. Lower latency at the same clock speed = potentially faster throughput.

Latency made no difference to the most if not all G3 and later machines. However, the Intel chipset has the potential of exploiting lower latency IF Apple has allowed that feature.

As far as I can tell, the few companies offering DDR2-667 SODIMMs at lower than CAS Latency 5 so far, are cheating and reporting the latency of the chips at 533 MHz or even 400 MHz, not 667 Mhz.

My RAM is from crucial, and ive had no problems. As far as I know there is no difference in the performance of the different makes of RAM.

Your paying for the service i.e. quick delivery, good customer service if it breaks etc

I used memory from 18004memory, it was princeton and had no problems. Is was more then half the price then Crucial and has a lifetime warranty also. Not sure why people buy from Crucial now since there prices are insane.


Macbook dont even use Samsung ram. Its Hynix not sure how expensive that is

Just make sure that the RAM you buy is guaranteed to be compatible with your mac. Also make sure it has a lifetime warranty. With those bases covered it doesn't really make much difference which brand you get. Fact of the matter is that there are only a handful of companies in the world with the facilities to produce RAM chips. So you might end up spending $100 more just because it has a mainstream branded stamped on it.

The choice is your's.

I bought Samsung ram from OWC a bit more than a year ago when I got my Powerbook. But then again, it was only 25% more expensive than the no-namer stuff, so it was an easy decision.
