Is there likely to be any performance difference between Apple-branded RAM and something cheaper such as this? If so, what? Any idea which brands will give equal performance to the Apple RAM?

Crucial, DataMem, etc. They all work the same. Apple is just more expensive.

Know that this RAM will work just fine but it will probably not run in Dual Channel Mode with the RAM that comes with your MBP. So if you want it to run at its fastest you should buy two from this retailer and downgrade the Apple RAM all the way as far back as you can.
