I have seen a thread started for the Macbook random shutdown problem, but not for the Macbook Pro. Searching the internet, I see mention of the shutdowns, but no specific examples. Anyway, here is where I stand with my Macbook Pro random shutdown woes:

I bought a Macbook Pro (MBP) from Amazon on May 13. It was a stock 15” with the 1.8 GHz processor and a serial number starting with W861. About 3 weeks ago I had my first random shutdown. During normal tasks (surfing the internet, checking email), the machine would randomly shut down. Up until a week ago, it only happened intermittently (about 1-2 times per week). Then it started crashing after 20 seconds or less when it reached the desktop after startup.

When the frequency increased, I called Apple and they had me ship it in. I called them on Sunday, Aug 6 and shipped the MBP back on Tuesday Aug 8. They “fixed” the problem on Aug 10 and it was back to me on Friday, Aug 11. The "Service Detail" showed the following fixes:

-Battery (They said my serial qualified for the battery replacement)
-Hard Drive
-HDD ASSY (I assume this means hard "drive assembly")

As soon as the machine was in my hands, I started it up and within 2 minutes of turning it on, it shut down. I started it up again, and the same problem occurred. Needless to say I was livid at this point. On Saturday, Aug 12 I called Apple support back and it happened while I was on the phone to them (1 hour 5 minute phone call). I’m sending it back as soon as the box comes in.

The most frustrating part of this experience is how easily reproducible the problem is. Whoever "fixed" it clearly didn't test anything. Another irritating problem is that they errantly replaced the hard drive (which I couldn’t back up due to the frequency of shutdowns) and now I’m out all of my data.

Has anyone else seen these problems with the MBP? I will continue to update the link posted above as this continues.

Thanks,

LOL! I think most experienced this issue..

This saturday morning, It happened to me 4 times back to back..

Then I couldn't boot up my computer (I took video clips of it with my digicam).

One thing I tried and helped was: 1. Take the battery out 2. unplugg the power cord 3. open up your laptop 4. press power button for 10 sec.

When you start back up, it will not shut down. I tried this every single time and no problem shutting down, until I let it sleep and wake back up or I shut down and turn back on.

I'm sending mine back to Apple today.

Which model do you have? Which models does this affect? Has there been success with a logic board replacement?

Thanks,

I had this problem. Turned out it was the battery. It was recalled and I got the new one shipped free overnight. Cant remember the link but I found it on these forums.

Draft,

I don't have the MBP. I have just the macbook. But I'm sending it in today to get the 17in MBP. I'm hoping that when i spend $3k on a laptop, I have better reasons to complain than with $1.5k computer.

But in serious note, I think this is complete BS for us consumers to become test dummies and wasting our time. And most of us on here seem to deal this kind of problem because we "LOVE" Macs. I been a mac/Apple user since 1986, when I was in junior high. And now as a professional, its a pain in the ass to deal with this kind of inconviences. Its not worth my time when I have to spend hours on the phone, or taking my computer to some shop to get little things replaced (yellowing keyboard surround).

And by sound of what I read on this forum and other forums, this problem doesn't discriminate how much money you spend. And its a BIG problem!!!.. This morning, as I was backing up my Macbook to my external HD. The computer shut down in the middle of 7g transfer (computer came back on from sleep). I had to do the trick above and dump the old files and retransfer. PIA!!!
