Hello Everyone,

I need your guys' help. I am going to be a college student this fall at Carnegie Mellon Uni. Im going to be studying Comp Sci, so i will need a laptop that can dual boot and or run the virtualization software. Ive decided i want a macbook pro. The reason for this is because 13.3 inches is just to small for me, and i like the option of having my own dedicated graphics memory. Now my question is. I have a powerbook g4 running at 1.5ghz with 1.5gb ram. So im pretty sure i can do the first couple monthes of Uni with my powerbook. What i was wondering is, im hearing all these reports of a new case design and merom and everything. So when should we expect to see this? and what kind of changes should we expect to see in the case redesign and new proccessor? Will it run cooler? how much faster?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dan

well, if you have been reading the threads here you get all these questions answered. Merom is faster & cooler yes. And 64 bit, also important for high end stuff.
It is not clear when the Macbook Pro will be upgraded. However, with your current PB you certainly have the time to wait, cos that is still a wonderful machine.

I suppose that the next rev of the MacBook Pro could be redesigned, but I kinda doubt that it will happen. Merom will allow the MBPs to run cooler and faster (gotta love that). Not sure how much faster Merom will be over Yonah, but if you can wait for those chips to be released, do it. :)

Since you have a Powerbook, it can't hurt to wait. I have an iBook and am waiting till December. Merom is supposed to be released Aug 22, and then in computers by mid-September. It should run cooler, and maybe 20% (?) faster?

I don't think they're going to make a huge change in design, but a modification would be nice since it's basically the old Powerbook design. I'm crossing my fingers for black anodized aluminum. :D

Merom is not cooler (or not by much). It runs 20% faster (according to Intel) but uses the same amount of power.

Thumbs up for providing the CORRECT response - Merom will be cooler OR faster, not both.

There is a train of thought that says the current design is flawed in a few ways like the latch, warping, heat etc and I think it's too limiting (4x single sided DVD writer in a pro machine, for example) and it's a bit of a compromise.

So from those angles and others, not to mention the age of the current look, a redesign would make sense.

However, a completely new machine, just 8 months after a semi new machine is launched and just 6 months after it shipped would be a little unusual.

I'm hoping for a new design. I like the current one, but anything new is good and the chances are that a new one would look pretty special.

Merom and WWDC would be a good opportunity to introduce it too.

I really do prefer the current model's color though. While black is nice, the "aluminum" color stands out to me and looks a lot more sleak. Hopefully if they DO offer black (which I find a bit doubtful), they'll also offer the gray as well.

Looking forward to any updates. Once an update is announced, I'm buying it ASAP.

Actually I still think the material used on Calphalon cookware would be amazing on a MBP.. it is tough, it is black, and the brushed finish just looks so seksy.... :p

My uncle told me that there'd be a huge change, but I'm not allowed to say what it is:p ;)
I hope you all get the joke

Go Pirates!
I'm actually from pittsburgh, if you have any questions about the city hit me up.

I'd def wait! Your current machine is a great deal, for now. The newer machines can only run cooler, be faster, sexier, etc....

I'd Kill for a PowerBook... I got a 100 MHz laptop with Windows 3.1... It's good for word processing, and extremely light internet.(Like, complete text-based pages)
