I guess I'll just preface things by giving my specs- machine bought in April, 2.0ghz MBP/1gb/100gb 7200rpm/256mb vRAM

Anyway, on with the story:
First off, my MBP has been repaired twice- the first time I sent it in for the whine, and it came back whineless, although the screen whined and it was covered in scratches. So I sent it back in and got it back quiet and scratch free. It has been fine for a few months. Fast forward to now.

Earlier today, from the right, rear corner of my MBP started making a whiring/clicking sound that is rather hard to describe, very loud (much louder than my processor whine every was), and really, really annoying. I put it to sleep and the noise didn't stop for a few seconds, when it slowed until it stopped, making me thing that it was a fan problem. I then launched Call of Duty 2 to see if added heat made it worse. It did, and the noise was so loud that I could actually hear it with headphones on listening to the sounds of dying Nazis. Same through my Creature IIs as well as the built in speakers. Oh Sh*t, I thought, and went to get the phone to call AC.

The first time I tried to call I got through and waited for a few minutes listeing to some weired folk music. I then got a message telling me that all the reps were in a meeting, and to call back later, so I gave it two hours or so and called back. I got through after about 15-20 minutes (playing GTA: San Andreas while holding is a great way to not get annoyed about wait times; not only does it pass the time, but it gives you a great way to take out your anger :D ). Anyway, I talked to the guy, and described the sound to him; he had me listen to a clip he had to see if it was the sound. The sound was the the processor whine I had before, which is not what my new noise was. He then had me dim the display to see if it was he screen buzz, which it was not. He had me reset the pRAM, which only made the sound worse. (?) Finally he had me shut down, remove the battery, hold down the power key for 5 seconds, which I'm not sure what it is supposed to do, but it didn't work. He told me the only thing he could do is have it repaired. I then asked if a replacement or refund was possible, since this was the third time for a $2600 dollar machine. I was nice about it; it is not their fault the machine keeps breaking, no need to shoot the messenger, and he told me that he couldn't authorize it but he would bump me up the chain to see what could be done.

I was on hold for maybe 10 minutes when Andy came on the line and asked me a few questions. He had me run the hardware test which gave me the error of 4SNS/1/40000000:'TmOP'. He told me that usually he would have to have me send it in a third time, but since my previous two repairs had resulted in logic board replacements and this error indicatred it would probably need to be replaced again, he said he was going to authorize my replacement. I said he was going to try to match my original configuration, which we almost did except they only had the 128mb vRAM configuration, which I didn't want, so he gave me the exact same as I originally (with the 256vRAM) plus a .16 processor bump. Yay! Victory!

Anyway, I am glad that it worked out like this and looking forward to my computer, I just thought that I would share the story and try to give some hope to the MBP owners of the world.

Also, does anyone know if the problems like all the whining issues have been sorted out at ALL in the new(er) machines? If not I'll just sell this off and wait for Macworld '07.

are you getting a new unit or a refurb unit?

I'm almost posative it is new- he was talking about currently shipping stock so it could be either- but since it is a "replacement" I am hoping for a new unit.

Did you have 256 vram? and now they can only give you 128? That would make me think refurb as maybe thats all they have in stock?

He thought I had 128, and the computer he offered me was based on his wrong assumption. I corrected him and he is giving me one with 256.

My original post was unclear so I'll go clear that up...

thanks

Can you see an order in your account?

No, nothing is showing up in my account, but he told me that I should be receiving the shipping labels tommorow, as well as some other e-mail- his computer went down while I was talking to him, so he said it would go out tommorow.

Different circumstances for me but it resulted in being without my MacBook Pro for 38 days and when I got it back they had broken more things in it.

Needless to say, I rather dismayed, called AppleCare and told them I was not confident about sending it in once more for another round of stabbing at it which may or may not actually repair it (based on previous experiences).

For all my troubles they upgraded it to the 2.16Ghz version. Hopefully it will have no issues or I may just as well get a refund.

Well, I really do hope that these new modles work out; I would hate to open the box and have it start whining again.

Christ that was easy.

It took me three months to get my PM replaced, and its currently in getting a video card replaced.

But we've already determined that apple hates you. I'm a fresh new face; they don't have a big enough file on me to care about me yet.

Yours is a familiar story. My MBP has been in 4 times and now needs 5th with the same hardware error you have.

In answer to the whining sound, the new fans I have in now are a different Brand to the original so I think the problem is solved.

I agree that it is not the messenger's fault that the machine keep breaking, but if you look at it the other way, these guys represent Apple. And I can ensure you that it is definitely Apple's fault for not having a functional QA unit.

Anyway, congratz for having your laptop replaced.

Just wanted to follow up. I've been a student leader at outdoor school for the last week, so my new MBP, which took around 7 days to get here, has been sitting boxed up in the entry hall for a while. They sent me a brand new computer in a brand new box with all the accessories. I thought about selling it off but decided I don't need to wait for merom, so I got it out and here I am. No whining, no loud fans; it is still quite hot but not unbearable.

Oh, and they managed to get all my CTO options I originally had in there right, not to mention the .16ghz processor bump for free. Yay!
