I guess I'll just preface things by giving my specs- machine bought in April, 2.0ghz MBP/1gb/100gb 7200rpm/256mb vRAM
Anyway, on with the story:
First off, my MBP has been repaired twice- the first time I sent it in for the whine, and it came back whineless, although the screen whined and it was covered in scratches. So I sent it back in and got it back quiet and scratch free. It has been fine for a few months. Fast forward to now.
Earlier today, from the right, rear corner of my MBP started making a whiring/clicking sound that is rather hard to describe, very loud (much louder than my processor whine every was), and really, really annoying. I put it to sleep and the noise didn't stop for a few seconds, when it slowed until it stopped, making me thing that it was a fan problem. I then launched Call of Duty 2 to see if added heat made it worse. It did, and the noise was so loud that I could actually hear it with headphones on listening to the sounds of dying Nazis. Same through my Creature IIs as well as the built in speakers. Oh Sh*t, I thought, and went to get the phone to call AC.
The first time I tried to call I got through and waited for a few minutes listeing to some weired folk music. I then got a message telling me that all the reps were in a meeting, and to call back later, so I gave it two hours or so and called back. I got through after about 15-20 minutes (playing GTA: San Andreas while holding is a great way to not get annoyed about wait times; not only does it pass the time, but it gives you a great way to take out your anger ). Anyway, I talked to the guy, and described the sound to him; he had me listen to a clip he had to see if it was the sound. The sound was the the processor whine I had before, which is not what my new noise was. He then had me dim the display to see if it was he screen buzz, which it was not. He had me reset the pRAM, which only made the sound worse. (?) Finally he had me shut down, remove the battery, hold down the power key for 5 seconds, which I'm not sure what it is supposed to do, but it didn't work. He told me the only thing he could do is have it repaired. I then asked if a replacement or refund was possible, since this was the third time for a $2600 dollar machine. I was nice about it; it is not their fault the machine keeps breaking, no need to shoot the messenger, and he told me that he couldn't authorize it but he would bump me up the chain to see what could be done.
I was on hold for maybe 10 minutes when Andy came on the line and asked me a few questions. He had me run the hardware test which gave me the error of 4SNS/1/40000000:'TmOP'. He told me that usually he would have to have me send it in a third time, but since my previous two repairs had resulted in logic board replacements and this error indicatred it would probably need to be replaced again, he said he was going to authorize my replacement. I said he was going to try to match my original configuration, which we almost did except they only had the 128mb vRAM configuration, which I didn't want, so he gave me the exact same as I originally (with the 256vRAM) plus a .16 processor bump. Yay! Victory!
Anyway, I am glad that it worked out like this and looking forward to my computer, I just thought that I would share the story and try to give some hope to the MBP owners of the world.
Also, does anyone know if the problems like all the whining issues have been sorted out at ALL in the new(er) machines? If not I'll just sell this off and wait for Macworld '07.
