I got my MacBook Pro last week. One of my main concerns is the heat problem - I can't keep my hand on the area above the F-keys for an extended amount of time, it just becomes too painful.
The squealing noise on my machine appears to only happen when I remove the power lead - it is completely silent when plugged into the main supply.

However, I've only recently started to notice a new issue - recently, I've started to notice a sound which I can only describe as a hard drive - or fan - trying to started up, but failing after a couple of seconds. This noise would happen every 15 seconds or so. It's not too loud, but distracting nonetheless. Could this be linked to the heat problem?

I'm going to keep a close eye on the steps Apple take to rectify these issues, and options they offer to customers, like myself, who already own a MacBook Pro. There is talk of replacing the notebooks, but I live in Northern Ireland where there are no Apple stores - so if this becomes a reality, am I to ship the notebook off again, at my own expense, waiting for ages to get a replacement? More importantly, how can I use the Notebook in the mean time, knowing that I might have to send it off, to be replaced with a new model with a new hard drive?

Does anybody know about any solid info on MBP replacements?

Cheers,
S.

Because the whining issue can be temporarily 'fixed' with certain apps, I'm hoping it will just be a case of Apple updating their firmware or its an OS X update. As for the fans & heat problems, I'm really worried about this as well, I wanted to order my MacBook this week, but all these problems are freaking me out!

Well I just got my MacBook Pro replacement... Apple let my dad put it on his credit card so I could have both the new one and the old one at the same time. I was able to just use the Migration Assistant to bring everything over to my new computer. They'll be crediting us back when I return the old one.
I live in the US so I don't know if they'd do that for you but it's worth a shot to ask.

My problem was (along with the whining sound, which has been fixed in my replacement) a small dent that was on the corner of the computer when it shipped.

As for the heat "problem," I think that the area above the FKeys is designed to dissipate heat... in other words it's a feature, not a bug. What are you putting your hands up there for anyway? :)

As for the fan noises, are you sure it's not the DVD drive that you're hearing? That's the only thing that really sounds like a fan starting up and shutting down quickly that I know of. I know mine's a little noisy but not so much that I mind it.

And zenvision, don't let the problems you're hearing about freak you out. I've had a great experience so far with my new one, and there really was not that much of a problem with the old one. Remember that people don't usually come on here to report their good experiences. If you want to get one, get it.

It's definately not the DVD drive, it's something come from near the F-keys. If the area above the leyboard is intended to be a source of heat dissipation, then this is a terrible design flaw!
I know the Intel chips are going to run hotter, but this is rediculous. I'm putting my hands there, because it's next to the keyboard - where my hands are supposed to be :)
Looking back, I wouldn't have bought the MBP now, and would have waited a couple of weeks until I was sure everything had been ironed out.

I just want to know about the replacements :)

mac4drew, can you keep your hand on the metal above the keyboard (after the machine has been running for a while)? If you can, then you don't have the same problem as me. If you can't - do you like having a laptop you can't touch?

That reminds me, I experienced my first screen flickering last night. I hadn't experienced it before, and I hope I don't experience it again!

For a £1500 machine, this is not good enough.

I take it you saw no difference in temperature on the replacement?

Ive had the exact same problems with my MBP and so i took it in. The genius couldnt tell me about the whine, but what sounds like the HD or Fan starting up is the fan. He said that most likely when the computer has been on for a couple hours the heat sensors in the computer sometimes get a little confused and they keep trying to start up a fan. He checked my HD as well, but he said that was fine.

As far as the whine problem...my whine is coming from above the F4 key. I called up apple and they are sending my problem to apple engineers to figure out. Hopefully they will come back to me with a fix.

-cheers

Are you sure this is the hard drive just writing infomation?

Just received my MBP on friday...and on saturday I noticed the whine as well. It can be stopped using photobooth or opening comic life it seems.

However, at different levels of brightness of the LCD, there seems to be a sort of electronic buzzing eminating from the top right of the computer. I called apple and they told me to shut down all program and open one finder window...then move that window around the screen. THe buzzing stops, however it comes back at certain levels when changing the brightness again. Disturbing indeed. I don't know what they can do to fix this; It's not really a big issue just an annoyance that I didnt want to see in a $2500 laptop.

Also, I have definately noticed ALOT of heat coming from the left side of the machine, especially near the F keys. After a time, the heat seems to even reach the place where my palm rests to type...a bit disturbing..oh well the price for dual processors I suppose

Mbp

I'm having the same problem with my MBP. I think for 2500$ you should put your hand on the machine anywhere you @%&$ well pleased and it not be burning hot. I do understand this isnt a "laptop" it is a "notebook". But Apple shouldnt release something that is so reveloutionary and have this many problems. Apple knew of these problems before the release, they should of held off, considering numerous problems. I bought a stock 2.0 in the SoHo store last week. And im already feeling the heat problems and a weird sound when im running normal apps. When I move around the screen i can hear the pitch go up and down. I love this machine, but its a double edge sword at this point. I just wish it wouldnt havnt these problems considering the price tag. I do have a 1.5 12" PB that i havnt had a single problem with its my "with me all the time" machine. I think im going to purchase my Apple Care Next week and start going through replacements.

This is true, but if im having a problem with not evne having the machine a week. Who knows a year from now after firmware. I think its rediculous that Apple doesnt let any program like istat show the Temp of the computer. I think its very shady on their part.

I'm sitting on the sidelines waiting for the dust to settle but I am expecting Apple to fix my heat issues. When it is obvious that a solution is available I will be expecting Apple to fix my MBP. I agree that not having a simple way to measure temperatures is strange if not shady.
