So, it's increasingly looking like my beloved MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) is coming to the time of obsolescence. I'm currently trying to figure out where I go next from this little workhorse that has served me well for the past 9 years.

I have a spanking new iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pros, so I'm not exactly without power or access to higher end apps but I do like having a laptop for the days where I need to bash out big documents and the like. I would like to have some of the ore modern facets of MacOS like sidecar and access to some of the newer iCloud features on the Mac and I do like the MacBook and attached external display for some phot editing and such...

So does anyone have any recommendations on the next step up?

Just to be clear, this wee beastie still pulls her weight, I'm just starting to get my head around replacing her within the next year and getting an idea of what price points I'm looking at.

~C

What specific kind of work are you wanting to do on your new machine? That's a determining factor in what machine you decide to purchase.

Do you mind providing a little more detail about that first?

Hey there, apologies for the delay. The Mac is used for a multitude of tasks, in-depth research purposes which can be browser heavy, writing complex documents and some image and graphics editing. I guess, it's not a high-end workhorse I need but it's nice to have the juice when it's needed and it would also be nice for the next one to last as long and rain as much functionality as this one does!

Thanks for the response.

Well if that computer is still fulfilling your needs, any M series Mac will be more than capable, so your pick really. M1 MBA can be had for as little as $850 new on sale, if you're willing to spend a few hundred more you could get the M2 MBA, or a configuration with more storage and/or RAM. The latter may be desirable but probably not strictly necessary for your use case.

What's complicated about this?
Get a 2023 MacBook Pro.
Either 14" or 16".
Even the base models are great performers.

If price is an issue -- they will be showing up in the Apple online refurbished pages before too long (if you have that option available where you are)

Good advice bro. I'll keep the eyes peeled on the refurb pages.

Similar situation with me, coming from a MBP 13" Early 2015 which is getting long in the teeth.

I could do with a bigger screen but I do not need the Pro power. Therefore I hope that in June, the MBA 15" will materialize. For me, that would be ideal.
