I have a late 2021 MacBook Pro M1. Never a problem until yesterday when I opened it and nothing. Could not do anything and tried all of troubleshooting steps. Plugged in Magsafe and it did not light up, USB charger did nothing also. It was dead.

Took it to Apple and it wasn't really a "Genius", just someone who did the same thing I did and pronounced it dead. Said they would need a couple of days to try a Revive or it would have to be sent for repairs. Repair cost would be $900.

How often does Revive really work? I'm guessing the logic board just died for some unknow reason after 1.5 years. I really do not want to spend $900 repairing that machine and I need it ASAP, I do not have a second machine.

Has anyone ever traded in a broken machine?

Thanks all. Lots of years owning Mac laptops and never had one die like this.

Sounds like a short. Here's a video that shows the gist of locating the short but instead of a thermal cam because not everyone has one you can locate the heat source by feel with your hand then pinpoint with the alcohol dab method. You'll need access to schematic to get the component value for replacement or post on repair sites/subreddits for identification. $900 for premature failure is excessive. For that much you can find new in box M1 MBA 16GB/256GB.

I’ve seen revive work. I’ve seen it not work.

As far as “How often” it works - ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ hard to say. It’s not a common enough problem for me to really have an idea about that. It’s certainly worth doing; if you have the compatible Mac & cable you can try it yourself or a store can do it for you.

@macmyworld did you end up sending it for a revive / did it work for you? Experiencing something similar with my MacBook Pro and wondering what my chances are of reviving it from the dead

Well my macbook was cursed with a similar issue. When revive didn't work, I tried holy water. Then the machine started hissing and shooting out sparks of electricity. What really alarmed me was the sound coming out of the speakers almost as if the computer was saying, "POWER! UNLIMITED POWER!"

Next thing I knew, Ian McDiarmid was slapping my face, yelling at me to wake up and stop posting bloody nonsense on the web.

Seriously though, if you can part with your machine for a few days, you might send it to a service that can do component level board repair. I would never take Apple's word that your mac is kaput without a second opinion. Chances that any place that can do component level repair can also easily recover data from the machine as well, plus you might be able to get insight if your problem is something common to your particular model or if this was just a freak occurrence.

Just seen this is an old thread…will leave my reply for anyone else.

Just to check …you are talking about Apple Configurator 2 Revive option?

I have only tried it once and it didn’t work, but AC2 Restore did. I would try that before handing over for repair.

Thats what I was thinking as well.

It sounds like it could be stuck in DFU mode, and if @macmyworld has another Mac lying around he could get a faster response at home.
