Anyone else notice that the new Macbook Pro runs hotter than the previous model powerbook? I cant even keep my hand on it touching the bottom.

No, most people use them to make ice.

OK, serious question, would you rather apple send out a patch that makes your comp cooler (but in effect slower) or just keep it boiling and 'screaming' as jobs would say?

Another thing for me to be concerned about before making the jump to a MBP, but then, I'm looking at laptop cooling pads as an option rather than expecting a complete resolution to this issue, as long as Yonah™ is Inside anyway. I don't know if I'll be able to hold out to see how well a Merom™ MBP does with the heat, but with all of the other issues I'm reading about on the current Rev, I just may have to wait.:(

I've always said that someone needs to manufacture a laptop with a larger griddle so I can cook up some brefkast while I'm getting my daily dose of MR. :D

Stop running Windows XP on it ;-)

Don't expect the new machines to run cooler...just expect more performance for the same heat output...given the choice between fast and hot, companies will sell hot because speed sells.

It's not like any other PCs are any different...all laptops fight the same heat issues...apple just happens to use the case for cooling, allowing them to make smaller machines. if they use a plastic case, then they will have to make thicker machines with faster fans.

If the G4 was running dual core at 2GHz, it would would be putting out more heat than the powerbook as well.

As I sit here with my MBP on my lap, I would say that yes, it is hot. However, since it is the coolest f***ing thing I have ever owned, I would say it does not matter.

well i dont kno, but when i go into my "local" apple store, they have 6 of them set up in a line, and i was going down the line testing every one (im wierd, i kno) and it seemed that some of them wer almost cold, and others caused 2nd degree burns. i guess it is random like the sparatic airport issues, but if you went to apple, they probably could either fix it or exchange it for you. even if it is running faster, it would be better for it to run at the normal speed as not to completely fry your brand-new $2500 laptop.

anyone tried changing the power settings?

Why can't the patch actually be user switchable low power/high power. My freaking $500 acer laptop has that even...

didn't apple just release the "rev d" mac book pros that supposedly were cooler. If that is the case, then that could be the reason for the different temperatures at your local Apple store, some where rev d some weren't.

This doesn't even make sense...Intel and ATi have not made cooler processors, so how would the MBP run cooler? The only thing they could have done is sacrificed speed for power consumption, and that'd go over like a lead balloon.

This so-called "revision-d" is likely just to fix things like flickering screens, and the other annoyances that some people have been complaining about.

At the end of the day, they are battling physics...and until some major breakthroughs are made, physics is going to win. Remember back in the day when everyone was in an uproar about having to put a heatsink on a CPU? We're well beyond that now...people always seem to forget that nothing is free...we could make a processor which produces very little heat, but it would also be much slower. Imaging how loud people would be complaining if the MBP was slower than the PowerBook.

Well this is my first experience with a laptop, but mine (1.83 MBP) rarely gets uncomfortable. I use mine primarily as a desktop, sitting atop a wooden stand that I built for it. If I remember correctly, the MBPs vent heat through somewhere near the hinge (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), so I went out and got a $7 desktop fan from WM, so there's always air moving over and away from it when in use. I also use it frequently on the kitchen table, sans stand, and it doesn't get hot there either. The battery compartment can get fairly warm, but that's to be expected.

The air from the fans blows out near the hinge, but the majority of the heat is radiated through the case (by design...to decrease the need for loud fans running constantly). Most PC laptops use plastic rather than metal for the case, and rely on fans, which is why everyone is so shocked by the heat output, and is convinced it is a design defect.

I never care about heat beacuse I have a huge 9" fan blowing under my iCurve. I never hear the fan of the lappy. All I hear the 9" fan. I plan to replace my wal-mart fan with a hello kitty fan in a few months when I get to college.
