So was using my MBP this morning and no issues. I went out and have just come hom and tried to use it and I'm getting a screen issue. The screen doesn't seem to booting up with the machine. I hear the start up chime but the screen just does seem to follow. I've tried the different troubleshooting online but nothing works. I also now seem to be getting vertical line, as show in the pictures.

I've tested the machine by plugging it into a TV with a HDMI cable and can access the computer that way.

Has anyone any idea what the problem is and a solution? Going the TV route I can't access the reinstall the OS options is it worth trying that?

Could be GPU issue or display cable. Fiddle with the position of the display moving hinge up and down. If it’s the cable, certain positions will correct the display. If not, an external display may be in your future.

Same opinion at @iMacDragon. If I had to wager, I'd say ribbon cable, but this would be a bit less common version in that progressive worsening and a "spotlight effect" is usually what people see. That's when it looks like you have spotlights under the screen. What year is that MBP?

It's a late 2019. Is a ribbon cable an easy fix, I did renew my apple care when it lapsed at the end of last year.

AppleCare? No brainer.

Yup, as BigWaff said, if you have AppleCare, a ribbon cable should be an open-shut case. At least it was for me when I brought in a 2016 with strangely blanched colors. I said the spotlight effect was the most common symptom, but perhaps it's just the most talked about one because that's not what happened to me.

I took my MBP in on a Monday, they ran diagnostics, took one look at it, and wrapped up my visit. It got shipped off and it was shipped back to my door by Friday.
