This happens about once a week. If i'm playing starcraft and listening to itunes at the same time, i'll hear a loud pop(from the speakers) then all sound will turn off, no matter if i unplug the speakers or not. Then about 15 mins later i'll hear the pop again and all sound will come back on.

Could this be the computer turning off the soundcard because its getting too hot? any ideas?

Does this *only* happen with the external speakers?

no no, i tried to explain in my post, but it'll cut off, and then even when i unplug the externals, the sound does not come out of the speakers on the computer either. And the sound comes back on the same way(with a pop) if the externals are plugged in, or if i'm using the computer speakers.
