Two years ago I purchased a MBP for my son and it has a 3.1 GHz Dual-core i5 with 8GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3, 13 inch 2017. In the next month I will be buying my daughter a 13" MBP and the processor is much different. The current 13" MBP is 1.4GHz Quad-Core i5 with Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz and 8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory

I see the GHz is much lower on the new one but the new one is Quad core and the old one is Dual Core. Can anyone tell me how much faster one is over the other? It the old one better?

The new one will be faster for most things. It will boost up to around the same speed as the old one when running workloads that only need a single core. And if running workloads that need multiple cores, obviously 4 is better than 2. (The old one, when running both cores, will certainly not be running them at 3.1 GHz).

I know there is some website that puts benchmark numbers on systems. I can't find it. Does anyone know the website?

I was able to find this and they seem to be about the same speed 909 vs 903. The quad comparison is much different. The dual core is like 2092 and the quad is about 3755. I am not sure where I will see this difference though

I think that’s what I said. “Around the same speed” for single core, and faster for workloads that use multiple cores.

cmaier, you were exactly correct and thanks for taking your time to help with my question. I am in the dark about this, but could you (or anyone) give me a couple of programs that would benefit from the multi core setup that the new one has? I am not looking for an exhaustive list but if you know any of the more common programs that would be helpful. She will be a freshman college student (Math Major).
