I think my C2D 2gig mem 2.33mhz macbook pro is taking too long to start. I thought it used to come up instantly to the gray screen with the apple on it. Now it takes 40 seconds from the time I press the power button and hear the dong to the time the apple shows up in the middle of the screen. It only takes another 22 seconds to show the login prompt. It seems to be doing a pre-boot scan or something. I have to usb devices plugged in. Is the 22 second boot time ok (after logo shows). I have had it since nov of last year.

22 seconds is fine from the dong to the fully usable system... something is wrong.

Yes, my friend had the same problem. The startup disk was not pointed to HD, so it took a while. Fixing this changed the boot time drastically.

That is what I would expect. I will try the suggestions above. It is 40 seconds from dong to grey apple logo, then 22 more till the login prompt.
