I just called apple because my MBP is less that two weeks old (received Oct 4) and was allowed to rma it.

10 % restock fee.

I had a maxed out configuration, but the free ram upgrade (2GB) is now standard and had to settle for the slower 120GB 5400rpm - what happened to the 100gb 7200 option?

But that pretty much makes the price the same even after 10% restock! I am now getting a 15 MBP core 2 duo with the same memory, larger (but) shower hd and an additional battery for almost the same price.

I think that by going with 3Gb, you performance may be slower anyway becuase the ram is not running in dual channel anymore (2GB stick, 1GB stick). Uneven.

Thanks Apple. You rock.

the performance bump of another gig of RAM is bigger than the bump of having matched pairs.

sure there would be a bump if the 3GB could be configured in matched 1.5GB pairs....but mismatched pairs at 3GB is faster than a matched pair at 2GB.
