Hey all.

I'm running a late 2011 Macbook Pro (high sierra) as my second machine. Whenever I launch After Effects, Chrome or other creative suite apps, I get a grey screen with...

"Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue startup"

I know I don't have much info, but any ideas what may be causing it, or how I can diagnose the problem?
I've tried the regular Pram bits etc.

thanks!

Audit has it right.

IF it's a 15" or 17" 2011 MacBook Pro, you must read up on "RadeonGate"...

Thanks guys.

If I used a gpu switcher to select integrated only (intel) I get the same error.
Also there are none of the display artifacts, rainbows, lines, corruption etc that a lot of people report with the Radeons, just what looks like some kind of catastrophic system error.

And...it only happen when I open certain apps.

Could it be anything else, or are there ways of troubleshooting?

If you can post a kernel panic log, we can look at it and see if points to the specific issue you're having.

Open the Console app (use Spotlight or it's in the Utilities folder of the Applications folder). On the left, click on "System Reports". On the next column to the right is a list of reports, look for those that start with "Kernel_" and end in ".panic". You can copy and paste. If the problem is very specific, a single log can pinpoint the issue. Other times, multiple logs may be needed and sometimes the root cause of the problem can't be determined from the kernel panic logs. So just choose the latest one and post it here.

If you don't see a kernel panic log, post that as a result.

Thanks everyone.

Here's the latest of many logs. I see some GPU reference in there...?

The fans seem to run at high/full speed even when the computer is idling and the left rear base is always way too hot.
I run a MacPro as my main workstation and this is my backup so not too catastrophic. It's been doing it for a while and just wanted to try and sort it so its useable.

What are my options with regards to fixing it?

Your kernel panic report does look like the GPU problem common to the 2011 MBP. Since you get the kernel panic on a consistent basis, you should try safe mode and see if that helps. If it does, it might be software related. Otherwise, more likely than not it is the GPU. If the other kernel panic reports you have are similar to this one (references to the GPU), then that makes it even more likely it's the GPU.

If possible, clean out the interior and replace the existing thermal compound with new compound. Hopefully, this will help with dissipating the heat. Other than this, there is not much else to do unless you want to have a repair shop reflow the gpu chip. Reflowing would be a temporary solution and replacing the gpu chip would be very expensive.
