Macbook pro unibody late 2008-- 8GB RAM question!!!

So i installed 8gb ram in my friends macbook pro 2010, and then i googled my macbook pro late 2008.. and it said that i can not put more then 4gb dd3... (2x2gb) that is what i have right now.
Then some form had some post that the Macbook 2008 can support 6gb (2gb+4gb) ...
So i put all 8 gb (2x4gb ddr3) and it did supported it, the macbook was running just fine and the system spec were showing 8gb ram!!!!!

My question is this, is there any danger and risk of doing that?
can it over heat and burn any of my computer components?

The 2008 unibodies support up to 8 gb after snow leopard. I've been meaning to buy a couple 4gb sticks myself.

Whoa. Really? I've been using 6GB as I thought that was it and adding 8GB may show but when you dip into it things get REAL slow. So 10.6 lifted this limitation?

Woah - do me a favor and hold down the Option Key, pick the Apple Menu and then Apple System Profiler and let me know what model identifier you are. If it's MacBookPro5,1 you match me and I'm ordering a second 4GB module - woot!
