Macbook Pro v Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5

Hi everybody
Can anyone tell me if I would see a speed slowdown replacing my 2*2.7 Ghz PPC G5 with a new Macbook Pro, I'm using it for fiddling with iMovies, iDVD and iTunes and normal internet stuff.
I would like to go portable, I am loving my machine but sometimes I would like Tiger to be a bit snappier:)

I have 2.5 GB Ram


Is it faster with the Intel-chip?

It would be faster with the new Macbook pro line. Shoot for the 2.4Ghz models!
 
MBP 2.33 vs Dual 2.7 G5

Hi,

I have a Dual 2.7/X800 XT/6GB, Mac mini 1.66/2GB and a MBP 2.33/3GB at home. At work I have a Dual 2.0/9600/2.5GB RAM.

I really don't notice a difference in OS/app UI responsiveness. Everything is snappy on all 4 Macs.

The Dual 2.7 G5 benchmarks roughly the same in Cinebench for CPU but the MBP has a better score for graphics (and the new one has a next gen Nvidia mobility part so the performance should be drastically better - in games/HD playback(lower CPU usage), etc).

If you use Windows then the MBP is a no brainer. I use Parallels and run XP all the time.

We have a HDV 1080i Canon video camera at work. I can play 1080i video from that camera on my Dual 2.7 and the MBP 2.33 at max fps. The Dual 2.0 at work drops frames. My point is that HD video is a killer and the Dual 2.7 can handle it. For what you use it for your Dual 2.7 is overkill to begin with.

If you can get a good price for the G5 then I would do it (I did not for my G5 so I kept it). You won't be getting something that is drastically faster (CPU wise) but it will be far more flexible.
 
The one weakness with the MBP, compared to the PM G5, is going to be disk performance and space. A laptop disk drive is just not going to perform as well as the desktop. Not to mention the ability to have multiple drives in the PM.

another reason I am thinking about buying a MacBook Pro is that my bank only except windows for online-banking :mad:

So Parallels would be nice, I have an 20 inch Cinema Display, I probably would sell also, and buy a 23 inch Cinema Display that I should have bought in the first place.

Hi Davel.

Your quite right there, but I have a Western Digital My Book 500GB Pro Edition and a Maxtor 120 GB ext hard drives, so I will manage:)
 
Don't buy a Cinema Display!

Get a Dell 2407WFP - more features at a better price. I am very happy with it.
