macbook pro vs macbook/imac combo

With all the talk on these boards about problems with the macbook and macbook pro. I recently had to return a MBP. Any thoughts about macbook/imac combo set up instead of a single MBP. Price is similiar.

In this case, I'd probably suggest just going with the MacBook Pro. I think that if I were to get a MacBook and an iMac, I'd end up not using one nearly enough to justify owning it. I'd rather have a MacBook Pro with better specs than the iMac and MacBook. With the MacBook Pro, you're getting equal or better performance compared to the iMac, and portability. If you need more screen space, I'd hook up a Dell monitor.

Personally I would go for a MacBook Pro and hook it up to an LCD monitor, external HDD, keyboard and mouse.

Exactly. The simple solution is usually the best. Even though you had to return you previous MBP, I think the new builds have worked out the kinks. After a while I think the problems tend to creep up only if you are looking for them.

It depends are you going to be carry the laptop alot? If you need something smaller go with the Macbook/ Imac combo.... If they are going to be the same price, you got 2 computers.

Also it depends what you do with the computer.

It really depends on how you intend to use them, personally I'd prefer the MB+iMac combo. With them at least I can still leave one machine at home tending to various stuff (like.. downloading files, or performing scheduled EyeTV recordings, etc) while still having a portable that I can go around with.

With the MBP I lose that advantage. Also the MBP is not as portable as the MB, it might seem like just an inch but it can actually work out to be quite a substantial increase in backpack requirements...

I opted for the iMac/MacBook combination and am really pleased with that decision.

The 20" screen on the iMac and the full size wireless keyboard is much more satisfying to me personally as a home computer, and in terms of performance, it is actually a bit faster than the MBP I think as the graphics speed has not been clipped out of concerns about heat and battery life.

The 13.3" MacBook, at least to my view, is a much better size for a portable.

I know that people love their MBPs, and I am sure they are lovely, but to me, the screen size is a bad compromise for home whereas the 15.3" is just a little big for the road. Why compromise? As you point out, for the same money you can have the best of each world in its appropriate setting. iMac + MacBook = Joy.

I'd go iMac/MB, unless you really need to do some video editing and/or gaming on the go. Macbook's are noticeable more portable than MBPs, and the iMac isn't far behind the MBP in terms of power, so you're getting the best of both worlds.

iMac/MB Combo definately two heads are definately better than one. Plus if one breaks down you dont have to be without a computer.....and with the MacBook Pro there's a significant chance you'll have problems.
