Okay, so I installed Boot Camp (w/XP) on my MacBook Pro. Since then, I cannot shut my computer down when in the MacOS. When I push the power button, the box that has the 'restart', 'sleep' and 'shut down' buttons does not come up. Also, when I click on the blue apple in the menu bar and try to shut down from there, nothing happens. This goes for the 'restart...', 'shut down...' and 'log out of ...' options. To turn off the computer I have to do the ole hold-the-power-button-for-3-or-4-seconds thing. Everything runs fine on both platforms, its not slow, and shows no signs of anything else being wrong.

I talked to the applecare folks and they recommend I reinstall boot camp, however, i have programs on windows installed that were given to me by my college, and reinstalling all of that stuff would be a whole bunch of work.

So far, I've tried taking out the battery, disconnecting the power chord and holding the power button down for 5 seconds, and I've tried making a new account, which has the same problems as my normal one.

Is there a simple fix to this (and by simple I mean not having to reinstall boot camp /xp)? Is there a way to completely back up all of my programs and preferences in XP to my external hard drive (500gb) and reinstall Boot Camp? Would it be very detrimental to the computer finished out the semester force-shutting it down?

I just installed bootcamp for the first time today and had the same problem. I just hold down the power button for like 5 sec, shut it down, restart, and it appears to be fine now.

I wish I were so lucky, I've force-shut down & restarted my macbook numerous times and it has made no difference.

use a program like norton ghost to duplicate the windows partition.

afaik ghost doesn't work because of the bootcamp setup, but other apps aparently do work. google around :)
