NeuronBasher said:The reception is great. I haven't seen mine dip below 4 bars yet, no matter where in the house I have been. So far, so good, but I haven't been able to give it a real speed test since I get horrible performance transferring files from it whether I'm on wireless or wired ethernet. I need to track that down, but transfers from the internet seem to be performing as I would expect.

if you have another mac at hand run http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and see the results you get with wireless compared to ethernet - to another mac....
We wait with baited breath...

Wireless to Washington DC: 14835-14982 kbps down, 1823-1831 kbps up
Wired to Washington DC: 14494-15632 kbps down, 1820-1860 kbps up
What I meant to say about the horrible performance was that it was transferring files from my Windows server. I think it is a problem with the SMB communication, I just haven't had time to track it down.
MacRumorUser said:OMG look at those speeds They are amazing, we don't get anything even remotely like that in Ireland
Your speeds are consistent though, so it seems you don't have a problem.
NeuronBasher said:It gets hot. Hot enough that it would be uncomfortable on your lap if it has been running for a long period of time. I don't have a Powerbook so I can't compare it to that, but it's hotter on the bottom than the Dell Inspiron 6000 it's replacing. Aluminum conducts heat a heck of a lot better than the plastic in the Inspiron.
How's the performance with WPA encryption enabled? I have no performance issues without encryption or with WEP, but when I enable WPA my internet download speeds drop to 1/3 - 1/4, e.g. 25kBytes/s compared to 100kBytes/s.NeuronBasher said:Three runs each, wireless and wired:

I believe that's the issue MacRumorUser is seeing.

I have a MBP (2.0Ghz) side by side with a 17" aluminum PB (1.0GHZ). On MBP, I not only get my Airport Extreme, but see 4 other networks from neighboring houses - my 17" PB sees 3 of those 4 (with small antenna extended), so I take it that I get slightly better reception with the MBP. However, if I take both machines downstairs, as far as I can get from the base station, I get more (5) neighboring WiFi nets on MBP, but only 2 on the PB. However the PB show 4 bars on my on net, vs. varying between 2 and 4 on my MBP. Strange - I'm suspecting either the detection hdw/software is different on the two, or the definition of bars is different - the bars jump all over the place from one click of the meter to another on MBP, but connection stays solid.upperblue79 said:Wow 21 posts and no one has really yet discussed the wifi.
