Has anyone else noticed that the MacBook Pro doesn't have visible antennae on the sides of the screen like the PowerBook? Do you think this has any implications for wifi reception?

It's in the hinge.

Now that people have started getting MacBook Pros, can anyone say how the reception compares to aluminum powerbooks?

Interested in this too. With poor performance from some of the Imac duo's with airport it would be interesting to see if this problem persists in the macbookpro's...

The reception is great. I haven't seen mine dip below 4 bars yet, no matter where in the house I have been. So far, so good, but I haven't been able to give it a real speed test since I get horrible performance transferring files from it whether I'm on wireless or wired ethernet. I need to track that down, but transfers from the internet seem to be performing as I would expect.

And also some comments on the heat too

It gets hot. Hot enough that it would be uncomfortable on your lap if it has been running for a long period of time. I don't have a Powerbook so I can't compare it to that, but it's hotter on the bottom than the Dell Inspiron 6000 it's replacing. Aluminum conducts heat a heck of a lot better than the plastic in the Inspiron.

Ominous!!!! Looks like the problems with the iMac are being replicated.

if you have another mac at hand run http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and see the results you get with wireless compared to ethernet - to another mac....

We wait with baited breath...

Three runs each, wireless and wired:

Wireless to Washington DC: 14835-14982 kbps down, 1823-1831 kbps up
Wired to Washington DC: 14494-15632 kbps down, 1820-1860 kbps up

What I meant to say about the horrible performance was that it was transferring files from my Windows server. I think it is a problem with the SMB communication, I just haven't had time to track it down.

OMG look at those speeds :) They are amazing, we don't get anything even remotely like that in Ireland :(

Your speeds are consistent though, so it seems you don't have a problem.

Yeah, I have a cablemodem with a plan that gets me 15mbps downstream and 2mbps upstream. I have been thrilled with the performance since, as you can see, I actually get what they promise. :)

i picked one up yesterday and it was plugged in for a few hours and the only place where it was "hot" was towards the top of the laptop, towards the hinge. HOwever "hot" was not that hot. my 12" PB was hotter than the MBP. i would say the MBP are slighty cooler than the aluminums and that the heat is spread out at the top near the hinge area running the whole length of the laptop. if i had to give dimensions the hot area would be 2x14

How's the performance with WPA encryption enabled? I have no performance issues without encryption or with WEP, but when I enable WPA my internet download speeds drop to 1/3 - 1/4, e.g. 25kBytes/s compared to 100kBytes/s.

I believe that's the issue MacRumorUser is seeing.

The results I posted are with WPA enabled. For the sake of completeness, I'm using a Linksys WRT54G router.

Now that more & more MR members are getting their MacBook Pro's, how do you feel the wifi reception is?

If you've had iBooks or PowerBooks before, how do they compare to the MBP for reception?

To be honest I think that the reception is about as good as my PowerBook 1.25 was, but I never found it a problem before. I would say that the MPB seems to connect faster on waking from sleep and connects more reliably...

Today i am not getting good reception at all on my mac book pro. I have had it for about 4 days and it worked great at first. It picks up networks but wont connect to them consistantly.

Wow!!! I'm SO envious of your speed, it's about 10x faster than mine for both the upload and download :(

Gratz :)

Wow 21 posts and no one has really yet discussed the wifi. I got a mbp to replace my pb12 and I get at least 2 more bars than the pb. Also when I look at the available wireless networks around my house it finds 3 that my pb nor my wireless powermac see, so that's really cool. My powermac usually shows 2 networks, but right now my powermac shows only my network, but my mbp sitting on the same desk is showing my network plus 4 others. My pb12 would drop my connection in my garage, I get 2 bars with the mbp. Hope this info helps.

I have a MBP (2.0Ghz) side by side with a 17" aluminum PB (1.0GHZ). On MBP, I not only get my Airport Extreme, but see 4 other networks from neighboring houses - my 17" PB sees 3 of those 4 (with small antenna extended), so I take it that I get slightly better reception with the MBP. However, if I take both machines downstairs, as far as I can get from the base station, I get more (5) neighboring WiFi nets on MBP, but only 2 on the PB. However the PB show 4 bars on my on net, vs. varying between 2 and 4 on my MBP. Strange - I'm suspecting either the detection hdw/software is different on the two, or the definition of bars is different - the bars jump all over the place from one click of the meter to another on MBP, but connection stays solid.

Anybody know anything about the differences in the wifi hardware between the machines? I do know that MBP supports 11a, which I don't believe the PB does, so I assume differnent mfgr and/or technology.
