i bought a used macbook pro 15" mid 2010 on ebay a few days ago, it only boots when i do the smc bypass trick where you hold the power button while plugging it in, if i reset the smc, it wont boot and i have to redo the smc bypass. anyone know how to fix this issue?

IF you're needing to reset the SMC, then there's most likely a hardware failure.

Since you bought it on eBay, I would definitely start a dialog with the seller stating that its defective and you want to your money back.

i think i could've found the problem, the battery in the macbook pro is dead, and i only have a 60w charger, and not the normal 85w charger. could this be why it wont boot when i press the power button? because it DOES shut off if i do anything that would be power consuming if i boot it with the smc bypassed.
