My wife's 2016 MacBook Pro shut off in the middle of a presentation the other day; it was connected to a power source. She tried to power it back on but got the little battery icon thing that it shows when it is so dead it won't power on even with a charger. Problem is: it won't ever move past that. We've tried multiple known good chargers, power outlets, etc., and SMC reset, but it hasn't changed.

Apple Store couldn't diagnose the problem and wanted $600 to send in and diagnose. No way it is worth that now. Any ideas before I bite the bullet and just buy her a new one? Thanks!

Hi there, Apple is offering a free battery exchange program for MacBooks pro 2016.
I had a similar problem, went to the Apple store in Berlin in November last year and had it repaired. For that i had to pay around 200€. In March this year i found out on the internet that Apple admitted that they have a battery issue with this and a few other models and that they are offering this free exchange program. I called them and explained the whole situation, that it wasn’t my fault the battery broke down, since Apple said its some technical issue and after they checked it, they agreed to give a full refund. Hope this can help you somehow.
Warm regards from Berlin!

This is VERY helpful. Disappointed now with my local Apple Store. Will check back with them given this information.

In my opinion, you should try resetting the SMC.

Unplug the power, then shut down your Mac.

Hold the left Shift+Control+Option keys down, then press and hold the power button down. Keep all four buttons pressed down for ten seconds, then let go.

Plug the power cable back in, then turn on your Mac.

Hello yall,

my MacBook Pro 2016 will all of a sudden not register the cord being plugged in to charge. I kept trying different outlets, restarting and checking battery health (normal).

Suddenly, last night it had been plugged in for maybe 5 minutes while I gave up and all of a sudden I heard the chime as if it was plugged in and working. That was last night, the last charge- and I cannot get it to recognize the charge again today.

Has there been anyone else running into this more recently than the OP?

Though the local Apple Store wouldn't touch it for some reason, I was able to send it away using Apple's support online and they replaced the battery and some USB ports and it now works fine. I still think this should've been covered in some sort of extended warranty since there weren't enough battery cycles to justify the battery problems, I decided a working computer was still more valuable than a non-working one, so paid to get it fixed.
