Macbook Pro wont output HDMI signal to Panasonic tv

Hey,

So I tried to watch some movies from my macbook pro.

But when I connect the macbook to the tv (Panasonic) with my HDMI adapter the screen on my macbook turns blue for a couple of seconds and then return normal meanwhile nothing happens on the tv - it just stays black.

I have tried to connect my macbook with the HDMI adapter to another tv and it worked. So I'm confused that it wont work on the Panasonic tv.

My macbook software is Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
And it's a Macbook Pro 13'', ultimo 2011.

Does anybody knows what's wrong?

I would appreciate it if anybody could solve this problem for me.

Other than simply plugging it into another TV, did you attempt to change any of the TV's settings for input sources?

No how am I suppose to do that? We have 4 hdmi input on the TV and I have tried all four of them but with the same result.

What I mean by input sources is using the input menu on your remote to set the input the one that the MBP is using. If you've done that and it still doesn't work, then contact Panasonic to see if there is an issue using HDMI from a computer as a source.

Yeah I already tried that. The thing is that it used to work but suddenly it stopped. Could it be that I updated my MPB's software?

It could be but instead of that, try going to the display pane in system preferences and have it detect the TV as an external display.

I tried that as well but there isn't any option there. The TV doesn't show up there.

Same exact problem trying to connect a mbp to a samsung TV via HDMI

If anyone has since found solutions I'd appreciate hearing about them. I have had the same exact experience. TV does not identify the mbp as a source. The mbp does not detect the TV. Tried all 3 HDMI ports including the "in" port. My mbp screen goes blue for a second and them both devices do nothing. HELP ! I seem to have all the appropriate cables

It could be but instead of that, try going to the display pane in system preferences and have it detect the TV as an external display.

Check the settings for external displays in: System Preferences>Displays. There should be an option to have an external display behave as a mirrored display or an extension. Pretty sure this occurs when you have it set to extend rather than mirror but can't remember precisely as the options only appear when a second display is detected, so try whichever isn't selected to see if it's any different. External displays for MacBooks can be a bit sketchy.

Solution- Samsung TV/MBpro HDMI connection

Thanks for all the help- I'll share this in the hopes it saves someone some time and all the frustration I went through !

My original issue was the the TV and the MBP were not recognizing each other- making it impossible to work with display settings on either device- the screen would go blue for a second and then the laptop would come back on and remain utterly non-responsive to the TV. My husband's 2009 or 2010 MBP did the same thing 'cept the screen was a dull charcoal black versus a soothing sky blue. I incidentally was setting up a new Epson projector (1761W) with the MBP at the same time and found that the connection with the same cable and same adapter was equally non functional.

After hours of frustration and getting on the horn with the Epson support I ended up trying a new cable and new adapter. Voila- the Griffin mini display port- purchased through the Apple store is either incompatible or defective. So this cost me 8 hours I will never get back !

So using a gigaware mini display port worked with both projector and TV and two different HDMI cables (one radioshack- no ethernet and the one that came with the TV is HDMI/ethernet).

While the griffin unit may just be defective- I'm frustrated with Apple and all of their incompatibility and proprietary issues. Since they don't make their own adapter I assumed that going through the apple store and buying a "recommended" product would save me some grief. Guess not, and I know it could be bad luck- but where else do I have to complain about Apple and who is going to care ?

BTW- the displays on the TV work just fine with either extended or mirroring and I was able to easily go into the sound profile and send the sound through the TV and speaker system rather than the laptop.

Another note- someone in another forum mentioned that buying cable that is HDMI male to mini display worked for him too- so eliminating the adapter connection may also be something to try.

What cords worked in connecting your MBP to Panasonic TV?

EricaV, I am having the same problem, and also bought the Mac dongle to connect to my HDMI cord.

What did you finally end up getting? And what settings on your panasonic did you set?

HDMI Cord for MBP and Samsung Smart TV

Hi Kim,

See my post of 12/15/13 for the various brands that worked. Also note that my TV is a Samsung. Basically the griffin HDMI mini display adapter that I bought through the apple store "did not" work and everything else I've tried has worked: radioshack single cables, gigaware adapter to HDMI cable, cables that came with the TV and some cheap Amazon generic single cables that seem to have come from china. They all worked. I've lost confidence in Griffin products with this issue and others so I won't be using them anymore.

In my samsung TV, you have to go into the "choose source" menu and then choose the HDMI port you have it plugged into and it worked for me. I have 4 HDMI ports so I just did trial and error to see which one I was plugged into.

I found that changing the Panasonic display frequency from 30Mhz to 25Mhz did the trick on my MacBook Pro (display settings)
