Hi Guys,

I have 15 inch MacBook Pro mid 2010, I upgraded the RAM and changed the hard drive to SSD. It works well so far, but one thing that doesn't work is VLC, and also any other media player has the same issues.

is there anyone have the same issues?

Please help

According to the apple macbook pro page, the macbook pro only EDITS videos, i did not read if they play videos.
wait
I did check again, lotsa sales pitches about rendering, creating and editing videos, but nothing about playing them.

i hope the helps!

Just kidding

use an easier version of VLC, i had to that for my mac mini last month running el capitan.

Good intro,

what do you mean by using an easier version of VLC?

i have an older version from 2015 i use with elcapitan on the mac mini, that is sleeping now.
some websites have older versions i has forgot which ones.
just so we are discussing VLC, that the app with the traffic cone, correct?
i have a mental block on abbreviations.

Yes, the one with the traffic cone.

Why do you think other media player also having the same issue when I play the video?
[doublepost=1534604922][/doublepost]and, older VLC also still doesn't solve the problem, it acts same way

It would help if you describe what you try, and what you see.
What do you mean by "acts the same way"?
Does the window stay blank?
or, video plays, but with artifacts?
or video performance is jerky, but (more or less) viewable?
Do you get the same results with different types of video? (play from DVD, stream from weblinks, or just random miscellaneous video files that you download from somewhere - complete files, not streamed. Or something different from those listed?)

I tried to install the older version on VLC, reinstall also doesnt help.
I am currently running macOSX High Sierra on my late 2010 MacBook Pro.
Everytime I tried to play a video, the VLC stays blank and NOT RESPONDING
I got the same result with different types of video and even using different media player, it got the same issue, it will be NOT RESPONDING and having blank black screen. No issues playing video on Youtube

I have a new 15 inch MacBook Pro from late 2016, it doesnt have any issues with VLC or playing video.

You should be running the latest version of VLC, not an old version.

I am using latest version of VLC, tried all version also didn't work

Do you have the same issue with IINA?
https://lhc70000.github.io/iina/

Can you view video through any player, if you log in to a different user account on your Mac?
This would be a good reason to add a different account, if you don't have another, just for testing.

Still doesnt work, VLC open but black screen and NOT RESPONDING same as before
[doublepost=1534674592][/doublepost]Also I am having issues with Macbook stay on black screen when it went to sleep and I try to wake it up. the keyboard is light up but not the screen, I have to force shut down my MacBook every time after it goes to sleep

If you have (exactly) the same result, even with a fresh, new user account, then it's a configuration, or perhaps a corrupted file in your system somewhere.
A good next step would be a reinstall of your macOS system, which may fix your video issue -- worth a try, anyway.
If you are current with macOS, running High Sierra 10.13.6, then you can simply boot to your recovery system, and install from there --- or if you have a bootable USB drive with your current High Sierra installer, just boot to that. You can install from that, and you won't have to download all the system files before they install.
The macOS reinstall will not make you lose anything, but just reinstalls the system files, and all the associated parts of the system (such as the various extensions that are part of displaying video on the screen). After that reinstall, you should expect that your videos should work. (and should also fix your forced shutdown, too!)

I did re-installed, it has same issues as before with VLC but MP4 can play on quicktime now

So, it's likely affected by some other software that you have added to your Mac.
You may have some help if you check in your Console, watching for additions or errors reported in the system log when you try to launch VLC.
Also, the good EtreCheck utility can help you discover what startup software that you have running in the background, some of which may be the culprit preventing videos from working properly...

I had google chrome and smart converter installed, do you think default apps have affected VLC?
On my new MacBook, I have pretty much the same apps installed but no issues with VLC, make me thinking just because of old machine so it behaves that way

I checked on Console when I launched VLC, please see attached screen shot and what do you think?

Do you get the same problems if you are logged in as a test user?
Yes, same problems

I have been having this issues for awhile now, re-installed software (VLC and macOSX) even clean install didn't solve the problem, the only way that make the VLC work, I need to hit my Mac (literally hit my Mac) till the VLC works as normal and photo app start open too, plus I don't have any issues with black screen when my Mac wakes up when those apps open.

As I mention before, I start to think that because of old machine. I have my MacBook for over 5 years now, if it didn't behave like this I wouldn't buy new one, it got me so frustrated.

At first I thought that because of the hard drive, so I changed with SSD recently and turn out same issues, the Mac got faster but just opening video on VLC doesnt play and photos app stop working as well.

If the problem goes away with a whack that would point to a hardware rather than a software issue.

What do you think would be the hardware that causes the issues?

I upgraded RAM, SSD and Battery

I had the issues before I upgraded those

Read some online forum about hardware issues, but I end up having 3403D error when I did hard ware diagnostics

The 2010 MBPro is too old, and can't use the internet recovery diagnostics test. It's the reason for the 3403d error.
The hardware test can only be a local test, using the original restore DVD (which includes the hardware test on DVD).
There is a site that has a lot of the hardware tests that you can download and try out.

Scroll down to the link for your MBPro, (Mid-2010 15-inch MBPRo?) which should be the MacBookPro6,2
