Two nights ago my wife's 2013 MacBook Pro shut down after a few hours of off charger use. Now it won't power up. Holding the power button down will get the Apple logo and the status bar makes it to about 75% then shuts down.

Apple support walked through a few startup methods and it does the same thing. It will not power up in diagnostic mode, get can't load EFI drivers.

What are my best options for repair? Local authorized repair place said if it is battery they can't get Apple battery for vintage machines but for $50 they will diagnose it. I don't really want to dump $50 into something that can't be fixed if it is the battery.

Try this:

  1. remove the bottom casing;
  2. disconnect the battery;
  3. attach the bottom casing without installing the screws;
  4. carefully set the laptop on a flat surface and open the screen;
  5. attach the charger and don't touch any keys;
  6. hopefully, the MacBook will boot up on its own.

OP:

Is the MBP a retina or non-retina version?
The NON-retina version is the [thicker] one with the DVD drive.

The battery on the NON-retina MBP is easily removed and replaced.
The retina version is... more work.
