Hey everyone, I recently purchased a 2.4 GHz 15" MBP. As of Monday night, it hasn't been starting up.

It goes to the white screen with the gray Apple and the loading wheel starts turning, but then it turns off. I've tried all the recommended fixes from apple.com (resetting the PRAM, resetting the Power Manager, etc.). I also ran the Disk Utility from the OSX Install Disc and when I ran a repair, I got this message:

"Invalid sibling link.
Volume check failed.

Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit"

One thing which I think might have caused the problem is the external hard drive which I use. It's a 500 GB My Book from Western Digital. Once, I believe I left it hooked up to my MBP while the MBP went into sleep mode. When I came back to the MBP, a message said I had improperly removed an external device which may have caused an error. Also, I recently synced my iPhone with the MBP and updated to 10.4.10.

Is there anything I can do (besides setting up an appointment at the Genius Bar)?

Thanks for your help! :)

I doubt the external drive could have done this. It sounds just like a typical hard drive failure, so hopefully everything's backed up and Apple will be good about replacing it. I wouldn't attempt an Archive & Install just yet. If anything, a full reformat and reinstall might help. Of course, there are third party tools you can use to repair the drive, but they won't necessarily work.

I did a full format and reinstall. It works just fine now. Thanks for your help guys! :D :apple:
