I have had a problem recently, where I close the lid, and when I open it, nothing will happen. Then, I force restart it, and when it's back up and running, it gives me this message (attachment 1):

"The computer was restarted after Mac OS X quit unexpectedly. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple. "

Upon clicking report, nothing happens.

Any solutions? I have Core Duo Temp installed, and Apple installed 1 GB of RAM at the Apple Store upon purchase. I have a black MacBook Pro, with all latest updates installed.

EDIT: I think I may have put this in the wrong forum (actually, pretty sure), so feel free to move it.

Anyone? I really want figure out the problem and fix it. Just being able to sleep my computer is a great feature for me, and I don't want to lose it!

That sounds really strange.

Have you tried running your hardware test DVD to see if it detects anything that might be causing this (bad memory, etc.)? Insert the system DVD and reboot while holding the 'D' key.

I tried memtest and the hardware test. Both came out with no problems.

It seems to only give me the problem with nothing attached to it, including my external screen. If it happens again, I will tell you.

Seems that the computer is not registering the lid being opened....humm. Maybe that sensor is not functioning properly, hence not waking from sleep. The error message is typical, if you hard restart OS X that message typically pops IIRC.

I would try to help you but you are a Yankee fan.

j/k:)

Have you tried erasing the HD and then reinstalling Mac OS X? If you have an external HD and have enough room to save all your stuff this seems like the best step to me. Perhaps there was an issue that arose during the initial installation at the factory?

Just to make sure here, when you open up the MacBook and it doesn't wake up, what is the sleep light doing? Does it keep pulsing? And if so, have you tried hitting the space bar or some keys (or just pressing the power button once, not holding it down) to make sure it's not just failing to detect the lid opening?

If the light goes out, then it's powered down or it's failing to wake the screen even though it's otherwise awake. If the light keeps pulsing and hitting a key wakes it, then it's just not realizing the lid is open. If the light keeps pulsing but nothing will wake it, then it's comatose and I can't help you. The last of the three has happened to my G5 tower on VERY rare occasions, but it's never been a significant issue.

Not waking from sleep is a problem that is often symptomatic of bad RAM - I've had this problem with PowerBooks in the past. Try swapping out your RAM and seeing if the problem goes away...

Oh, and RAM problems are often not picked up using the hardware test unless you run it a number of times (don't ask me why). It really is quicker to test the memory by removing sticks one at a time.

I have been at my desk, so I haven't been able to test it, although it hasn't given me it in a while.

The sleep light continues as if it was on sleep. I tried pushing all the buttons, including the Caps Lock and Num Lock (which both would have lights light up), and nothing happens. If it happens again, I will report it to you. It's just that it happened 3 or 4 times before I posted here.

Reinstalling OS X is the last thing I want to do (BootCamp is this weeks project…last time it took me hours on hours, only dealing with M$ support saying the disc was trying to save to the wrong drive:rolleyes: ). I will probably try RAM if it happens again, and memtests again. I have never opened a computer before, but I guess a MB is the best place to start.

I'll get back to y'all soon.

try Parallels - I thinks its a better soln than Bootcamp (dont need to reinstall OS - sounds to me like it runs almost as fast) - plus you CAN share data between WinXP and OSX (you get a shortcut on your desktop to Parallels shared folders - that you share in the virtual machine profile) :)

Parallels is totally the way to go unless you're doing gaming or audio (or, I believe, disc burning). Otherwise, having a virtual partition and not needing the reboot is drastically easier than the alternative.
