MacBook Pro's RULE!

OK - so a few years ago, I was messing around on my iMac playing back 6 movies in Quicktime 4 on Mac OS 8.6 on my 400MHz machine smiling smugly to myself in the knowledge that it was a decent multimedia machine. So anyway - 7 years later I decided to see how my MacBook Pro would deal with a similar test. I downloaded all the HD UK Get A Mac adverts from Apple and opened them all in Quicktime on Mac OS X 10.4.8 and set them looping just as I did in my previous test. As the MacBook Pro is effectively a PC, I wondered how well it would perform.

Sufficed to say, it plays back all 6 streams at once without dropping any frames. Pretty damned impressive!!!

I love my MacBook Pro!!

Just makes me wish I had one of my own!

What resoulution were the HD vids, 720P or 1080P ?

Though playing back 6 480P ones is bloody impressive in itself, I doubt my iMac G5 could!

This is great. I read from a past thread that people will only write about product when they're disgruntled about (which is normal). But this leads people to make an erroneous judgment that a product is poor because there "seems" to be so many people having problems with it when in actuality it's the few that are having a problem with it. Usually people won't come in to write that their product is going well only to complain (even if it's legitimate).

I've seen that in other forums for cell phones, stereo, musical instruments, etc. But when it comes to the MB and especially the MBP, there seems to be lots of people who are writing about how they love it!

Sure there are still plenty of bad comments about the MB/MBPs, but overall I have never seen so many positive posts about the Apple laptop. This is surprising and encouraging considering how normally, people won't write in to tell everyone that all is well is their computer.

It's a testament to the quality and performance of the laptop.

Video Resolutions

OK - so not strictly proper HD as the videos are 480p (848x480 @ 23.98fps encoded using H.264 with a bitrate of just under 900 kbit/s)

Thought I should mention too, that my MacBook Pro plays back 1080p movie trailers from Apple's website at full frames.

I'm going to see how many 720p videos it can handle next. Will keep you posted!

720p Performance

OK - not quite what I was hoping for, but since when would you ever do this?! I downloaded the Apple iPhone Teaser from the front of macrumors.com and copied it 4 times (didn't want to try any more as I was running out of screen space). 4 streams stuttered far too much, so closing down to three enabled all three streams to play back without any stuttering or visual loss of frame rates.

So in recap 3x720p (1280x720 @ 29.97fps with a bitrate of 4369.8 kbit/s) played back what appeared flawlessly. Hows THAT for performance??!

I'm a bit surprised at seeing a lot of positive threads about the MB/MBPs. I'm in another forum for a different, non-Apple device and there are so many complaints about it, and I found myself agree with many of the complaints. Furthermore, there aren't a lot of praise posts about this other product, but that's normal. Honestly, why would you make a posts about how well your product is doing?

In this forum, we've all seen and read negative posts and complaints about the MB/MBP. A lot of them are legit as I'm sure some of you have written these posts, and I'm not complaining about that.

The thing that amazes me is that people are also writing in to tell us about how great their MB and MBPs really are. If it's normal not to make a post about the greatness of your product then MB and MBP owners are going against that trend. This suggests to me that these are really great machines. The scary thing is that it will only get better.

And no, I'm not an Apple fanboy. I don't even own a MB/MBP or any Apple for that matter. I've been a PC user all my life. Yes, I do want to get a MBP, but I don't need one now so I'm gonna wait.
