Ahoy hoy! :D

First time poster and soon to be mac-convert. I have played with macs over the years but never owned one. I am ordering two, count em, two macbooks on wednesday! One for me and one for my partner.

I looked at the macbook pro, but the difference between the top end macbook and the bottom end macbook pro didn't seem worth the £400-odd price difference. And I am pretty sure the macbook will satisfy all my needs. I wouldn't want to settle for a bottom end MBP anyway!

I plan to buy the 2Ghz white one, bog standard, and up the RAM and storage myself.

This is where my question comes in. Can someone tell me if these are compatible and acceptable please:

RAM from Scan computers

HDD from Scan computers

I use Scan for pretty much all my PC hardware, I find the prices to be competitive and the service to be first class. It would be great if I could continue to use them with my new Appleiness. Having said that, if anyone can point me in the direction of a better/cheaper deal for someone in the UK, please do so.

Secondly, am I right in thinking that once I install the new hard drive, all I do is put the OSX CD in and that will format and install everything OK?

On a final note, although I am excited (and scared!) to be getting my shiny new mac, I cannot help but feel disappointed by the way Apple want people to pay through the nose for RAM and storage. I can't understand how they can justify an extra £350 for an extra 1.5GB of RAM. And as for the price-hike for a black macbook...

Thanks in advance!

That RAM is wrong - it's 240-pin, where you want 200-pin.
DDR2, PC-5300, 667Mhz, 200-pin notebook memory is what you want.

The HD looked fine though.

Yes, you're right - after you have the HD installed, insert the OSX CD that will come with your Macbook, reboot holding down C, and then the install will guide you through.

Doh!

Ok, so no RAM from Scan then. I just looked and can't see any 200pin PC5300(which is what Crucial says I need).

I already looked at Crucial, is there anywhere cheaper?

There are definitely cheaper, but I couldn't suggest any because I don't know which ship internationally. Hopefully some UK-ers pipe in soon for ya!
